my brother just bought the surface pro 7, and initially the keyboard works, but after closing the type cover, once he returns, the keyboard does not work anymore, the driver cannot even be found. We tried all fixes, nothing except factory reset worked. It happened again today, a day later and we are perplexed. we cannot continue to factory reset every day for this keyboard type cover to work, what can be done??

    Since 2012 I am  using surface pro 4.  I was using type cover without finger print Id. Suddenly one fine day I found type cover not detected. Plugging for charging switch off and on I use to get light back in the keyboard. This was consistent for all most 1 month. One fine day i found on n off trick is not working. I ordered new type cover without finger print id. It worked fine for few days and suddenly it also sopped detecting. I used the same trick but after some time that also not worked. I contacted Microsoft online support. They did complete reset etc. Nothing worked. My cover is under warrenty they suggested replacement. Same cover was working with other device at store which i informed Microsoft. So not understood the logic behind suggesting replacement. Then they said i need to replace my Surface pro device saying it has hardware issue that's why type cover is not detecting. I refused to do that beacuse brand new devices also facing the same issue. Currently I am using logitech external keyboard K400 plus and device is also working fine. Wondering why Microsoft is not ready to accept it's an software issue and telling customer it's hardware issue. Today only received mail new type cover is been dispatched. I hope that will solve the issue. Keeping fingers crossed.

    I meant to reply to this post earlier but forgot about it.

    Meanwhile I've found something else that might be interesting in this topic;

    The type cover I had (or probably will still have) these issues with is the very rare 2015 'Type Cover with Fingerprint ID'. With the original type cover I've had since I originally bought my previous Surface Pro (the Pro 3) I have no problems at all since the few weeks ago I started to try that. So for now I've decided to stick with this old type cover until I find my newer one with fingerprint id reliable enough.

    So. What kind of (type) cover are you using?

    I tried every one of the ideas above, except reinstalling Windows 10, with no luck.  Have had my Surface Pro 7 for about 1 month.  Disappointing to say the least.  I am loath to reinstall Windows 10 given it doesn't seem to work for most and that generic catch all solution doesn't typically work if other steps to install drivers was unsuccessful.  Not sure what I will do next.  I am partially replying here to keep this thread current and to let people know this is happening with brand new devices.

    I just had the same problem recurring, except my previous solutions wouldn't work because, well those drivers are installed and that's about it.

    After again spending an hour trying several things, I found one that worked for me this time around (no guarantees though);

    1. Go to Control Panel (by pressing Windows+R, then in the Run box type 'control' and hit OK)
    2. In Devices and Printers, hit the button 'Add a device' (near the top left corner of the window)
    3. Let the wizard do its thing, finding devices via Bluetooth etc.

    In my case, this was enough. At this point I suddenly saw the Surface Type Cover device returning in the background so I quit the wizard and everything was working again. I didn't have to go through actually selecting devices or installing things.

    Hope this helps somewhat. Also saying this to my future self ;)

    I've had this similar issue. Not sure but it could have to do with the 'version 2004' (i.e. the May 2020 Update) of Windows 10.

    I first tried the suggestion of booting into the BIOS/UEFI and basically recycling the type cover port power with a few system restarts in between, but this didn't change anything for me.

    Then I went searching for up to date drivers and found https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4023482/surface-download-drivers-and-firmware which for each Surface device points to the latest version of driver download.

    Installing latest drivers (I downloaded and installed both, first SurfacePro7_Win10_17763_20.020.2886.0.msi then after a reboot SurfacePro7_Win10_18362_20.072.23016.0.msi) and after the first package the type cover already worked again.

    Hope this helps.

    Don't return your device for something like this. 99 out of a 100 times it has nothing to do with faulty hardware.
