Outlook on android - receiving notifications, but emails don't show in inbox.

I use outlook for android (Motorola Moto G running Android 5.1) and it worked great until a couple of days ago. Now I get notifications of new emails, but the messages don't show up in my inbox. If I click a notification to try and read the email, it says 'Couldn't open message', and takes me back to my inbox, which shows only old messages.

Please help!

It is definitely the case! I had the same issue on my Samsung Galaxy S10+ and when I switched off baterry optimization in Microsoft Authenticator which I use for 2FA and all works.

How exactly are you disabling power saving only for Outlook? Wanting to know for 2 reasons: 1. It may not have the same success for fixing the outlook issue as disabling power saving altogether, and 2. Cuz i want to try it but cant figure it out. (I dont see an option to turn off power saver for specific apps and i am assuming you are not simply turning off optimization for outlook, because that's sort of related but different)

Assuming you are on Android 8+ (if not, the steps will be similar), go to Settings -> Apps, find "Outlook" and tap on it.  In the screen that comes up, look for "Battery", and tap that.  That should bring up the "Use details" screen.  At minimum make sure "Allow background activity" is enabled.  If it is, and you are still having issues, disable battery optimization by tapping "Optimize battery usage" to go to the battery optimization screen.  Tap the dropdown at the top which should say "Apps not optimized" and change it to "All", then scroll down your list until you find Outlook.  Tap it to turn battery optimization for Outlook off, then hit Back or Home until you're back to whatever you were doing beforehand.

While I was having this issue in an earlier build of Android 9 with optimizations enabled, the most recent versions from T-Mobile on my Galaxy S9+ work fine with "Allow background activity" enabled alone, even if battery optimizations are turned on for Outlook, so you may find success that way.  If not, turning battery optimization off should definitely work (but make sure "Allow background activity" is still enabled!).

This has been happening consistently in my app as well.  I get the notification with the title of the email, however the app refuses to show the email.  If I login to my desktop I can see the email but not in the app.

As I was writing this, I received the email notification with the detail on my smartwatch, but the app is still showing no emails.

Please escalate this as it is not user error and it is happening consistently.  It is not a valid use case to flush all account detail and redownload emails to a device to receive each email, this is a priority 1 usability defect and must have some troubleshooting one to resolve it.  An email client that can't read email is a serious issue for someone using office 365.

For me, I think I've found a fix for this. I have the microsoft authenticator app on android. I disabled battery optimisation for it (added it as except from power saving features of android oreo). Now clicking on a notification gets me straight to the email!

I have now fixed, broken, and fixed it again on my Galaxy S9 phone, which makes me think I may be on to a workable solution.

The issue seems to arise with power savings for me.  Under Settings>Battery>Power Mode if I set the "Optimize" or save mode, the problem recurs.  I have to go into App settings for both Outlook and Authenticator, select "Battery" options, and set to "Not optimized" for the settings under "Optimize battery usage".  I also enabled "Allow background Data Usage" AND "Allow app while Data save on".  BTW, the battery usage hit from allowing these settings seems to be negligible.

After all these settings, "Force stop" both apps and reboot the phone.  After that it seems to work reliably.
