Outlook on android - receiving notifications, but emails don't show in inbox.

I use outlook for android (Motorola Moto G running Android 5.1) and it worked great until a couple of days ago. Now I get notifications of new emails, but the messages don't show up in my inbox. If I click a notification to try and read the email, it says 'Couldn't open message', and takes me back to my inbox, which shows only old messages.

Please help!

Turning off optimization mode works as long as my phone doesnt go into power saver mode when the battery gets low. As soon as power saver mode kicks in, i stop getting emails.  So back to square 2 of turning off power saver manually every time i want to receive an email in outlook. Gmail is so much better....
