How can I configure Excel to open only one instance similar to 2010.

Excel 2016 when opened opens only one instance. However, let us know if you are talking about the ability in Excel 2016 to open multiple spreadsheets in the same Excel 2016 window? If yes, then this feature is not available in Excel 2016 and was discontinued since Excel 2013.

    Along with other feature removals, such as alt+underlined key functionality and the removal of format dialogue boxes (in favor of formatting in the right margin), this is another egregious mistake by your team. I am a huge excel user, and when you remove keyboard functionality and other things that cost me hours per week of extra work, it is a big disappointment. Do your product strategists even use excel keyboard shortcuts? Here's some feedback: excel users are about functionality, not beauty. Think about that.

    I'm encountering same issues.

    Before upgrading to Excel 2013, I had a spreadsheet that opened at least 200 others in order to interrogate their content.  Each workbook being opened within the single instance of Excel.

    Now I can only open 50, which is also slower than before, before PC freezes and themultiple versions of Excel stop responding.

    Real pain.

    Microsoft, please provide a solution to this "feature".

    The opening of separate instances of excel prevents the use of copy paste special values between the excels open. I used this several times every day. This has definitely not been a helpful enhancement. Now I have to open each file within the 1 excel and going through the network locations when before I had hyperlinks to the network locations ready to go.

    Yes, I was speaking about the ability in Excel 2016 to open multiple spreadsheets in the same Excel 2016 window. Is there a way to configure Excel 2016 to enable this behavior?
