How can I configure Excel to open only one instance similar to 2010.

Excel 2016 when opened opens only one instance. However, let us know if you are talking about the ability in Excel 2016 to open multiple spreadsheets in the same Excel 2016 window? If yes, then this feature is not available in Excel 2016 and was discontinued since Excel 2013.

MS should pay its managers to stay away from any decision making, and leave SW developers to develop SW together with customers who actually use it in their everyday lives.

How can I configure Excel to open only one instance similar to 2010.

This is driving me crazy I have 29 reports I need to open and read one piece of information. I can't open more than one file at a time. Opening one at a time, completely slows me down. Why would you block this? It's crazy.
