Outlook saying I need more storage.

Hi there,

I've used a live.com account for years, and have always logged in through my browser to view emails. Today, the page loaded with a thin red notification at the top stating "From February 1, you'll need more storage to send or receive email."

Obviously, for a start, it's 16 days past February 1 which is weird, and my email is all working fine at the moment.

Clicking on "Manage Storage" opens a window, which states that my total used for my Microsoft Storage (things backed up from a laptop I hardly use, didn't even realise that they were being backed up to be honest) is 7.8GB out of a 5GB limit. I tried unsyncing my desktop on said laptop, but all it's done is remove everything from that laptop, which is pretty frustrating as I just wanted to leave the data on there and just free up some space on the Microsoft storage.

Anyway, I'm not overly bothered by that by now, as I'm more worried about my emails not working. Separate to the Microsoft storage, it lists my "Email Storage", which is 7.6GB out of 15GB. Does anyone know why I'm getting notified that I'm in danger of losing my email and pushed to buy a ridiculously expensive price plan?

    This is so utterly frustrating - is it designed in such a way that the non techie is panicked into deleting and trying to clear space? then no amount of 'clearing space' makes any difference whatsoever!

    I cant see my emails properly as they have squashed it into a small viewing window.

    Why dont they just say you either pay XX for access to your emails or this is what it will be like from now on?

    Its the pretence that pisses me off - and after 25years.

    Yes but what are these attachments no-one was aware of and how to get rid of them.

    Also, if synching is a problem how do you de-synch?

    exactly my experience, which seems a trick by microsoft to enroll millions on a lucrative space prchase subscription. I deleted most material in One-Drive but it made no difference to the space used (7.2 Gb over the new limit of 5Gb). I then deleted the pesky One-Srive App itself but still no reduction in space.Am I handcuffed and being led to punishment payment or is there a way out of this?

    As others mentioned before, Microsoft is now double-counting attachments toward both the "Email" and "Microsoft" storages in order to: 1) force people into subscriptions, and 2) save space in their servers for their ChatGPT business. It is a for-profit company guys. They don't respect their users; they respect their money. Accept that and move on. There are better and more honest email providers out there.

    I try to send an email today and it's a disaster. I'm told I'm allowed 5 Go storage but I have 6.2 (or something--got it down to 5.6 by deleting but can't seem to get it lower. Can't do much of anything. Can't even use the empty file fonction. I never saw any indication in advance that I was running out of storage and I had no idea there were limits. And I have never intentionally used OneDrive. I don't understand what is happening and trying to straighten things out is not possible because most functions are blocked. I've already spent a lot of time on this (didn't expect to spend my day this way). I find this incredible--like my account is being held hostage. It almost looks like I'm going to have to pay the 24 euros just to get out of this mess. But I don't feel like I should do that. I feel like they're robbing people. Now I'm starting to understand why people hate Microsoft so much.
