Outlook for Mac can't drag emails to folder with Gmail

I'm using Outlook for Mac with office 365, version 16.20, 181202.

I have an outlook.com and gmail account. I'm able to drag emails into folders on the left sidebar with my outlook.com email, however I'm no longer able to do this with my Gmail accounts with the latest update (just got the new UI). Is this a bug or new intended behaviour?

Corentin, you may want to actually check the product before making those conclusions. As I mentioned in my message, until the recent update, I had been able to do this for months with this account.

I have contacted the support team within Outlook. For anyone else facing this issue, turns out they are aware of the issue a fix should be on the way.

I've used the product for quite some time… I've been an MVP for Office for Mac since 2002. I'm not a paid contractor doing this on the sideline and I did check Outlook.

You'll see that there are other threads mentioning the same issues on the forum.

Up until recently, Outlook used to connect through IMAP and you were then just fine moving emails around in folders. A somewhat recent change brought OAuth support as well as calendar and contact syncing (requires a license through subscription or a perpetual license for Office 2019, not 2016). Since then, users have been enable to rename the Gmail folder, or move emails to the folders.

Microsoft is indeed aware of the limitation and they are indeed very likely to be working on implementing a better support for the folders for Gmail and Gmail-based accounts. You'll notice that this is also what's implied in Alan's reply to your original post.

Corentin

I'm using Outlook for Mac with office 365, version 16.20, 181202.

I have an outlook.com and gmail account. I'm able to drag emails into folders on the left sidebar with my outlook.com email, however I'm no longer able to do this with my Gmail accounts with the latest update (just got the new UI). Is this a bug or new intended behaviour?

It's several bugs in the new implementation of how Outlook for Mac interacts with gmail. It does not use imap anymore, but the new implementation has crippling bugs:

    • your gmail calendars and contacts are sync'ed with outlook, with no way to opt out if you don't want it
    • you  cannot drag emails into the account folders as you used to

    • you cannot manage the folders anymore

Now the good news. The old functionality is still there, and still works! It's just purposely hidden - why they'd do that is beyond me. Below is the workaround to go back to the bug-free imap implementation.

A: First delete your current account from Outlook:

    • From the menu, choose the tools->account dialog

    • Select your current malfunctioning gmail account, press the - icon at the bottom, and choose "delete only on this device"

B: Then recreate the account, forcing outlook to use imap:

    • from the tools->account dialog, click the little + icon

    • enter a fake email address it won't recognize, for example ending with @garbage.grb

    • it will try to look for it for a while, then fail, and finally, bring the old interface dialog

C: Then enter the account settings manually, like we used to do in Outlook 2010...

    • on the dialog, click the "imap" icon

    • correct the email address back to your real gmail, ending with @gmail.com

    • input the other settings as usual:

incoming server: imap.gmail.com, port 993, use SSL

outgoing server: smtp.gmail.com, port 465, use SSL

       your password

       click continue

a Google window should pop up, asking you to confirm that you indeed want to grant access to outlook.

And voila, everything works again. You can move emails around, and it does not mess up your calendars or contacts.

This is sick. This is just a Mac issue, it seems to work fine on Windows. It's been there a long while now, it would be good to get it fixed, or if they don't have the time or will, at least make the imap option easily accessible again.

An Office Update came out in the last 24 hours and this seems to have fixed the issue (at least it did for me).

I am waiting eagerly for this to be resolved.  Extremely frustrating.

    Hi Anthony,

Greetings. Very glad to reply to your case here.

Via my test and previous experience, the answer is it is not feasible to drag the emails into another folder with Gmail account. This has nothing to do with the Outlook for Mac version but it is related to the account type. The Gmail account is an IMAP account but your outlook.com account is an Exchange (active sync) account. That is to say, for Exchange account, it is feasible to do so.

However, we can right click the target email and choose "Move"> choose a folder to move the emails in Outlook for Mac.

    Regards,

    Alan

    Hi Alan,

tx for your reply, but I'm afraid this not completely true. I have always dragged and dropped in outlook with my gmail account, so it's due to an update I suppose. I hope you can fix this in the future because now Outlook is a less intuitive for me, because of this issue...

    R
