Outlook for Mac can't drag emails to folder with Gmail

I'm using Outlook for Mac with office 365, version 16.20, 181202.

I have an outlook.com and gmail account. I'm able to drag emails into folders on the left sidebar with my outlook.com email, however I'm no longer able to do this with my Gmail accounts with the latest update (just got the new UI). Is this a bug or new intended behaviour?

Corentin, you may want to actually check the product before making those conclusions. As I mentioned in my message, until the recent update, I had been able to do this for months with this account.

I have contacted the support team within Outlook. For anyone else facing this issue, turns out they are aware of the issue a fix should be on the way.

I've used the product for quite some time… I've been an MVP for Office for Mac since 2002. I'm not a paid contractor doing this on the sideline and I did check Outlook.

You'll see that there are other threads mentioning the same issues on the forum.

Up until recently, Outlook used to connect through IMAP and you were then just fine moving emails around in folders. A somewhat recent change brought OAuth support as well as calendar and contact syncing (requires a license through subscription or a perpetual license for Office 2019, not 2016). Since then, users have been enable to rename the Gmail folder, or move emails to the folders.

Microsoft is indeed aware of the limitation and they are indeed very likely to be working on implementing a better support for the folders for Gmail and Gmail-based accounts. You'll notice that this is also what's implied in Alan's reply to your original post.

Yeah, the newer versions of Outlook make it complicated.

When you add a new account, type in some gibberish

Then select IMAP in the next window

And edit the details to add your Gmail account with the proper information for the Gmail IMAP server.

You can't import a PST into Gmail. PSTs and OLMs are always imported straight in the On My Computer section in Outlook for Mac (Outlook for Windows is a really different beast in this respect).

As we pointed out in the previouss replies in the thread, Gmail folders are dysfunctional at this point and you can't drag anything to any of them in Outlook (I know… it's a real pain — I'm with you on this).

You cannot move emails to an online storage because they essentially live on a different realm. They are stored on their respective storage and only mirrored on your Mac. You should be able to copy emails from one to the other though (and then delete from the On My Computer section).

From your original message, it sounded like it was the other way around (can't copy from Gmail to On My Computer), which should work.

Just to clarify a few things here. I want to make sure I am on the right page.

    I have a user that:

    1. Has an Office365 E3 Account configured into their OSX Outlook.
    2. They also have a Gmail Account configured into their OSX outlook.
    3. They are attempting to drag email within Outlook from their Office365 Account into their Gmail Account but it does not allow them.
    4. They appear to be able to Drag emails within Outlook from their Gmail Account into their Office365 Account without issue.

In previous replies, users stated that an update restored the functionality when it comes to dragging email into their Gmail Account. However, my user who has the latest OSX Outlook from Office365 installed is still unable to drag items into their Gmail Account.

Is this functionality something that is still broken or what should have been resolved in a previous patch?

Is there a reason they appears to work properly within Windows but not in the OSX Outlook version?

    Hi Alan

    I don't think that's the case.

Until the update within the last couple of days, I have been able to do this fine for months.

The accounts are setup as synced to Microsoft Cloud, not as IMAP accounts.

I fear Alan is right… The Gamli accounts are not setup to use the proper Google OAuth authentication and are treated differently than regular IMAP accounts.

This opened up the possibility to sync contacts and calendars, but as you've seen there are now a number of limitations regarding folders. We can't rename them in Outlook or move messages to them. You have to do it all from the Gmail webpage (or a different email client like Mail).
