Fingerprint reader not working on Windows 11: "This option is currently unavailable"

I recently got a Dell Inspiron with Windows 11 preloaded. The fingerprint reader was working fine at first, but now it appears to not be working with windows hello. The option to add a finger or remove the fingerprint are greyed out and not clickable.

I've seen posts about this issue in Windows 10, but the fixes aren't working for me.

    HI, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

    I tried the following steps but it didn't work out. how can I download a new driver?

    my laptop is a Microsoft surface and go.

    Thank you Robin_Ben! That worked perfectly for me. I have windows 11 running on an HP Envy with a built-in fingerprint reader.

    that's is very true, if you don't have a pin setup, then you're screwed, as finger print refuse to work.

    The two ways I found helpful:

    1. You must setup up multiple fingers altogether during initial setup, to improve the chance of having at least one finger to be accepted.
    2. Setup another user from scratch, so that fingerprint can get setup again. But who wants to do this crazy solution to setup multiple users just to address the Microsoft Hello finger printing issue?

    This is a known bug, seems to be in both Windows 10 and 11. After a few software updates, it will show up. It does not seem to be a HP of manufacturer-specific issues.

    Microsoft must know about this but refused to publish any solution.
