Tried to the new release 8.1 today 10/17. My desktop was successful, but my laptop failed with can't update to 8.1 0xC1900101-0x20017.
I have read a clean install may be required. I have just installed windows 7 then upgraded to windows 8 about one month ago. Is there a way of downloading an ISO image for 8.1 and a key to due a clean install of 8.1 without paying $150.
The laptop is a ASUS U43F with a Crucial M500 960GB SSD.

Tim, One thing I wanted to correct in your statement...Windows 8.1 doesn't make you lose all your programs and reload. I have upgraded to WIndows 8.1 on 2-3 systems without reloading any applications. I am still unable to upgrade my Asus due to the driver compatibility issue in this thread, but I've given up on that for now. I really think it is up to Asus and not Microsoft to do something to resolve this.
Jorge, I finally gave it a rest after Microsoft was stumped and Asus said they would not put any effort in investigating the problem. I am running windows 8.0 in my U43F asus laptop and everything works great. Since upgrading to 8.1 makes you loose all your programs and you have to reload everyone, I thought I would wait a while and see if Microsoft provides any resolution of the problem. Our laptop was not listed as compatible for 8.1 and it may not be able to upgrade. Keep watching this blog and maybe someone will be able to upgrade to 8.1 by some improvement that Microsoft or driver improvements in the future.

Hi Michael, I have investigated the inability of the asus laptop U43F to upgrade to windows 8.1 with both Asus and Microsoft. My conclusion is to wait a while and see if either one has a work around software solution for the upgrade to 8.1. My U43F works great with windows 8.0 and has not problems with drivers or other hardware issues. After more that 20 hours on the phone with remote access to my laptop and escalated to the highest level of the Microsoft support team, they came to the conclusion that this model will not upgrade to windows 8.1. If you look at Asus's web site, not all their computers are listed as compatible with windows 8 including our model. Asus was in the dark about this issue until I was able to find an upper management support person at Asus who concluded that this model will not upgrade nor will Asus do anything with it's software/hardware to enable it to upgrade to windows 8.1.
Microsoft did look at all my logs relating to installation of 8.1 and couldn't conclude why it wouldn't upgrade. Those logs were given to the software experts for additional investigation. Since other brands of laptops have this same problem, a fix in the future may be coming. I recently reimaged my laptop with an known good working copy of windows 8.1 and during boot, it reported that the software couldn't work and gave the same error codes as before. Since an attempt to upgrades to windows 8.1 from 8.0 wipes out all your software and you have to reload, I will wait and observe the blogs until someone reports a successful upgrade to windows 8.1. Please repost if you find the magic wand to resolve this problem, good luck.
I have tried for hours to upgrade my U43Jc from within Windows 7, and from clean install using USB, both give me driver violation with 0x101 - 0x20017 error. This is clearly an Asus problem.
