Tried to the new release 8.1 today 10/17. My desktop was successful, but my laptop failed with can't update to 8.1 0xC1900101-0x20017.
I have read a clean install may be required. I have just installed windows 7 then upgraded to windows 8 about one month ago. Is there a way of downloading an ISO image for 8.1 and a key to due a clean install of 8.1 without paying $150.
The laptop is a ASUS U43F with a Crucial M500 960GB SSD.

I just tried to reimage the hard drive of my Asus U43F laptop with a working copy of windows 8.1 and at boot, it gave me the same error as trying to update from MS store. Guess we will have to wait this one out for a while and see if Microsoft has a solution. I still get great performance from windows 8.0 with media center. I have tried most posted suggestions and have run out of ideals.
Hi Chuckc3, I have contacted Asus a few times and requested to talk to advanced technicians since they initially wasn't aware of the problem of upgrading to windows 8.1. Eventually, I got to talk to the technical supervisor who thought that only Microsoft would be doing anything with driver updates.
As I worked with Microsoft techs on the phone and with remote access to my laptop, most of the time the logs on my computer showed a failure to deal with drivers being recognized during the update and not that they were incompatible. After more than 20 hours of this, we decided to wait a while since this problem was being worked on at Microsoft. I will post more if I find out anything leading to a successful upgrade to windows 8.1. I have not heard of anyone being able to update the model U43F Ausus.
I have the same problem...I've tried several times to upgrade an ASUS U43F laptop to WIndows 8.1 and each time the upgrade fails. I think the basic problem is that ASUS has not upgraded the drivers for the system to be compatible with Windows 8.1. If you go to the ASUS site and attempt to download drivers for the U43F, the only drivers available are for Windows 7. Does ASUS have any plans to address this problem? I will also post this question on the ASUS site.
I am still working with MS about the Asus U43F laptop being unable to update to Windows 8.1. I have been on remote access for another 4 sessions since they kicked the problem up to an advanced group of MS troubleshooters. As I watch the remote access of my laptop, I see them being focused on drivers as the problem but anything they do hasn't resolve the problem at this time. They have been looking at log files and other installation files, running MS diagnostics and using their keys to install 8.1.
I have also contacted Asus technical department and they are clueless about the problem. I don't think they will be helpful in solving the problem.
I have noticed on several blogs that other laptop brands have this exact problem which is probably being researched as well.
Has anyone heard of someone who has successfully upgraded to windows 8.1 with this U43F asus laptop, would like to hear from you. thanks
So why can't the Microsoft win 8.1 upgrade produce an error message or log message to clearly identify what driver it didn't like????
