Adding MKV files to the Windows Media Player library

How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

"Permissions"=dword:0000000f

"Runtime"=dword:00000007

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

"mkv"="video"

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    Quildun: have you tried adding the .reg file linked by Petr to the registry? That one should definitely work.

    If the MKV files are already in your library but in a different section (such as Other media), they need to be re-added. See my instructions on the previous page.

    OK this is bull&^$%... MKV has been an accept video format for around what eight years why in the name off anyone who works at microsoft is it not in the "Video" list in the first place???

    anyway I have tried all the following suggestions I am running Windows 7 64 bit and had no luck getting it into the video section am i missing something simple here???

    hello witecat,

    i had the same problem. I found on internet registry that contains keys for x64 windows.

    import this reg file, reboot WMP and MKV files will be displayed in Videos directory
