How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

"Permissions"=dword:0000000f

"Runtime"=dword:00000007

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

"mkv"="video"

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    Ive tried your and Tims solutions but it didnt help. In my case solution was installation a third-party application named Home Media Server ([http://www.homemediaserver.ru/](http://www.homemediaserver.ru/)). Its really easy to use and absolutely no problem with file formats (and many other benefits too).

    Microsoft should be more carefull to user`s needs

    Hi guys!

    Great tips, Carlos.

    I installed K-lite codec pack (including Matroska splitter and ffdshow), and associated the mkv files to WPM during setup.

    I ran your   REG-script and re-started the computer

    WMP is now playing the MKVs just fine, but...

    Then I added the movie folder to the video library of WMP

    And?

    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

    MKV files still show only in "Other"

    So I can't see them when streaming with WPM as media server :(

    Why does WMP make it so bloody difficult?

    And why can't I just drag files/folders to whatever library I want?  As long as WMP "knows" how to play a filetype, there should not be a problem...

    using win7 64 WMP 12.0.7600.16667

    Any ideas (besides using other streaming SW) ?

    Hi,

    Install "Mastroska Splitter"

    http://haali.su/mkv/MatroskaSplitter.exe

    Then install both versions of "ffdshow" (x86 and x64)

    http://codecpack.co/download/FFdshow_Tryouts.html

    Reboot and you are done.
