Adding MKV files to the Windows Media Player library

How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

"Permissions"=dword:0000000f

"Runtime"=dword:00000007

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

"mkv"="video"

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    hi della did u get this sorted, if not this is what worked for me. put your mkv on external hard drive rename the exe file to mpeg   ie      hugo 3d.mkv.mpeg    trail it into windows media player works every time no need to waste money on convertors.

    Just go on the net find the latest codecs for Media Player and install them, it worked for me.

    I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, and WMP12.

    I stream mkv and mts2 through WMP to my Sony Blu ray without any problem now.
