Word 2016 always open in Side to Side view, even after changing it to Vertical view.

Recently, my Word 2016 had defaulted to scrolling between document pages side-to-side rather than vertically. I keep changing (under the View tab) the "page movement" to vertical, but each time I re-open Word, it defaults to side-to-side (see picture).

I don't understand why the sudden change, nor why Word won't "save" the last setting I have it on. Is there anyway to change the default to vertical and keep it that way?

I had the same problem. You just need to add the key.

Exit out of Word.

In Regedit, find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word'

Add the key 'Last View', then in there add a D-Word 'WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement', leave the value as the default (zero).

Restart Word.

Worked for me.

    Hello SuSu,

         We definitely understand the want for the program to be placing the settings as expected rather than forcing the program to open specific files as desired. We have read through this thread and see the steps that have been tried and are looking to see if there is anything further that can be done.

    From the testing done on a Surface Studio directly after an office installation, Microsoft Office programs should be able to function as expected  and default to opening every Word document in a vertical scrolling view. We were unable to replicate the issue described on our own Surface Studio.

    On the Surface Studio we installed Microsoft Office 365, then opened Word 2016 and selected the horizontal view and closed Word and restarted the Surface Studio. Any documents opened afterwards will show up in the previously designated horizontal view. When we change the setting back to vertical view and close Word and restart the Surface Studio, any word documents opened afterwards are opened in the vertical view.

    Again, we are looking further into this functionality and will respond if any helpful information is found regarding this situation.

    I agree with you and the original poster. We now know how to change the setting within a specific document, but are more interested in getting the program to default to vertical view upon opening all documents.

    I am not a Surface user, just a 365 subscriber on a pc desktop, but I've had this annoying issue for several months.  I did discover what I think is a solution for me:  I opened the Normal.dotm document, and saved it with the zoom value of 120%.  Future documents are then opened at 120% of course, but at least they are forced to move vertically by default.
