Word 2016 always open in Side to Side view, even after changing it to Vertical view.

Recently, my Word 2016 had defaulted to scrolling between document pages side-to-side rather than vertically. I keep changing (under the View tab) the "page movement" to vertical, but each time I re-open Word, it defaults to side-to-side (see picture).

I don't understand why the sudden change, nor why Word won't "save" the last setting I have it on. Is there anyway to change the default to vertical and keep it that way?

I had the same problem. You just need to add the key.

Exit out of Word.

In Regedit, find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word'

Add the key 'Last View', then in there add a D-Word 'WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement', leave the value as the default (zero).

Restart Word.

Worked for me.

    I also have a Surface Studio running Office 365 version 1703 (build 7967.2139) with the same problem. It began defaulting to View Side-by-Side sometime in March. I've read this article and tried editing the registry as suggested without improvement. All documents always open side-by-side, even when there's only one short page to show. The Zoom slider is not active until I change the view to Vertical again.

    I wish there was a solution, since I edit many documents every day.

    Office 365 vs 2016 should not matter.

    If the specific key does not exist, try creating it. 

    Background: The normal Windows process is when you create a Windows User Profile a bunch of registry keys are setup under that ID.  When Windows starts it copies your customized registry entries from your user profile to HKCU (H Key Current User).  Then you make customizations to HKCU during your session.  When you shut down Windows normally, HKCU is copied back to your personal profile.  If you do not shut down Windows normally, those customizations are lost.  Sometimes Windows gets "stupid" and does not grant itself the appropriate "Windows Access Rights" to add, change or delete some registry keys but it does not tell you this. Then you cannot make setting changes, but do not know it.

    Here is a wild guess.  Word cannot create the key in a way that is saved after you shut down Windows so Windows keeps resetting back to the wrong default.  If you create the key, and set the value appropriately it may stay. 

    If creating the key in HKCU does not work, then you will also have to create it in your personal profile, which is copied to HKCU when you start windows.

    You will have to look at the key after you set the desired option in the user interface to find out the correct value to save in it.

    See if switching between Touch Mode and Mouse Mode makes a difference.
