Word 2016 always open in Side to Side view, even after changing it to Vertical view.

Recently, my Word 2016 had defaulted to scrolling between document pages side-to-side rather than vertically. I keep changing (under the View tab) the "page movement" to vertical, but each time I re-open Word, it defaults to side-to-side (see picture).

I don't understand why the sudden change, nor why Word won't "save" the last setting I have it on. Is there anyway to change the default to vertical and keep it that way?

I had the same problem. You just need to add the key.

Exit out of Word.

In Regedit, find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word'

Add the key 'Last View', then in there add a D-Word 'WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement', leave the value as the default (zero).

Restart Word.

Worked for me.

    My Surface Studio has the same issue in always opening in Word documents including new documents in side to side page movement rather than vertical.  I have tried various proposed "fixes" but none have achieved the desired result.

    This issue does not occur on my Surface Pro4 or Surface Pro3 just on the Surface Studio which is very disappointing.

    I would really appreciate a solution rather than sympathy and the obvious statement of "Microsoft Office programs should be able to function as expected" which sort of adds insult to injury.

    I've been having the same annoying problem on my Surface Studio for months while my Surface Pro 3 and Surface Book work fine. The view originally worked properly in vertical mode, then after an update at some point the default switched to side to side. I will try the registry fix and report back.
