Word 2016 always open in Side to Side view, even after changing it to Vertical view.

Recently, my Word 2016 had defaulted to scrolling between document pages side-to-side rather than vertically. I keep changing (under the View tab) the "page movement" to vertical, but each time I re-open Word, it defaults to side-to-side (see picture).

I don't understand why the sudden change, nor why Word won't "save" the last setting I have it on. Is there anyway to change the default to vertical and keep it that way?

I had the same problem. You just need to add the key.

Exit out of Word.

In Regedit, find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word'

Add the key 'Last View', then in there add a D-Word 'WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement', leave the value as the default (zero).

Restart Word.

Worked for me.

    I support one Surface Studio and have this issue. Changing the zoom to 120% does nothing. Cannot save this change to the normal template. Added the referenced key to the registry and deleted it...both with no change.

    I have several users with 4k monitors and they do not have this issue. It seems to be localized to Surface Studio computers.

    I'd love a solution so I don't have to hear this attorney whine anymore.

    No misunderstanding; your workaround certainly alleviates the issue (and I'm going to be doing that for the time being), but I am hoping that Microsoft will be able to fully ameliorate it.

    Hi Kevin- Perhaps there was no misunderstanding, but just to be clear, I wanted to affirm that if you save the Normal.dotm file (in Microsoft Templates) with the zoom at 120%, then by default, all new documents will open with page movement in vertical mode (with of course 120% zoom).  That might be an undesirable (and certainly unnecessary) work around to the side by side scroll issue, but, it does work on all new docs opened, not just the one being currently worked on.
