Word 2016 always open in Side to Side view, even after changing it to Vertical view.

Recently, my Word 2016 had defaulted to scrolling between document pages side-to-side rather than vertically. I keep changing (under the View tab) the "page movement" to vertical, but each time I re-open Word, it defaults to side-to-side (see picture).

I don't understand why the sudden change, nor why Word won't "save" the last setting I have it on. Is there anyway to change the default to vertical and keep it that way?

I had the same problem. You just need to add the key.

Exit out of Word.

In Regedit, find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word'

Add the key 'Last View', then in there add a D-Word 'WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement', leave the value as the default (zero).

Restart Word.

Worked for me.

    Increase the zoom ratio by using the slider at the bottom right of the window.

    Thanks, but I don't think that was the original poster's exact issue. I'm having the same problem with Word defaulting to this side-by-side view. Yes, we can change it back to vertical every time we open a document (and, thus enable the zoom slider at the bottom of the page) but it would be preferable to have documents default to the vertical view in the first place.

    Hello,

    I'm not sure why the view setting isn't being retained, but I will be bringing this to engineering's attention. 

    The setting is stored in the registry at:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Last View

    there is a sub-key called WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement. If that key is set to 1, it is side-to-side. a value of 0  or no key at all, is Vertical

    The key gets created when you change the page movement setting (Vertical vs. side-by-side). If you exit Word and delete this registry key, when you boot Word again, it will default to Vertical.

    Let me know if this makes it work correctly, or if it gets "stuck" again. It sounds like something is going wrong with the writing or updating of this registry key.

    I should have clarified that I am running Office Professional Plus which may make a difference...

    Anyway, try deleting Word's registry entries. Start with the Data key at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Data.
