Recently, my Word 2016 had defaulted to scrolling between document pages side-to-side rather than vertically. I keep changing (under the View tab) the "page movement" to vertical, but each time I re-open Word, it defaults to side-to-side (see picture).
I don't understand why the sudden change, nor why Word won't "save" the last setting I have it on. Is there anyway to change the default to vertical and keep it that way?

I had the same problem. You just need to add the key.
Exit out of Word.
In Regedit, find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word'
Add the key 'Last View', then in there add a D-Word 'WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement', leave the value as the default (zero).
Restart Word.
Worked for me.

Thank you for starting the thread. I had a hard time finding anything about this issue in the other places I looked.
What's interesting is that I'm also on a new Surface Studio. I just had my husband try on his older PC running Office 2016 and Word defaulted to the vertical view just like on your Surface Pro 4. It's got to be something set up to default differently in our Studios, but when it comes to deleting registry stuff - that goes beyond my experience level.

As far as issues go, this is really minor so I appreciate your responding. I can certainly live with it, but I found it curious - especially since it doesn't seem to affect all users. As far as I can tell, just the original poster and me! :)

That is not the behavior I see on my installation of Word 2016: If I click Vertical and exit Word, Vertical remains activated.
Which is your specific release of Word? Look at File | Account (under "Office Updates").
Note that both Vertical and Side To Side are new options in Office 2016. Assuming that the options are indeed saved to the registry, deleting the registry keys for Word may fix the problem on your system.
Note that I'm not sure which registry entries are relevant. I'll see if I can find out.

Thanks for your assistance. I also have the same build, BUT I am only experiencing the issue on my Surface Studio. On my Surface Pro 4, my Word has been updated to version 1702 but is not experiencing the issue.
I'm unsure why the difference. You mentioned deleting the registry keys; how would one go about doing so?
