Having same issue with Surface Pro 7. Did all the things you're guided to do (clean contacts, restarts and forced shutdowns. Keys go dark, driver disappears as if it's just disconnected from the device. Very frustrating.
Surface Pro 7 type cover stops working, driver disappears?
my brother just bought the surface pro 7, and initially the keyboard works, but after closing the type cover, once he returns, the keyboard does not work anymore, the driver cannot even be found. We tried all fixes, nothing except factory reset worked. It happened again today, a day later and we are perplexed. we cannot continue to factory reset every day for this keyboard type cover to work, what can be done??

2020-02-21T02:12:30+00:00 Same problem! In my case it appears the driver disappears when plug in certain USB devices, still trying to narrow down which ones. Looking through device manager some of the USB drivers report as dated 2006!
Only way I can consistently fix it is do a complete reset.
Hi David,
I'm not sure if you're still having this issue but here's what worked for me:
-I chose the most recent file "Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Later Servicing Drivers,Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Later Upgrade & Servicing Drivers,Windows 10 S and Later Servicing Drivers"
- Extract the .cab file (I use 7zip, but I'm sure you can extract it however you want)
- Find the "SurfaceTypeCover.inf" file and right-click it. Select "Install"
-It's an extremely quick install.
- Disconnect your keyboard cover then reconnect it. It should now tell you it's installing your keyboard cover.
You should be good to go!
Hope this works for you or anyone else having this issue!

2020-02-05T12:45:48+00:00 Nope. No response from MS and now of the online fixes worked. I tried a different type cover and it didnt work either so looks like a problem with the Surface itself.
i have now returned the Surface and type cover and also gone back to a laptop.

2020-02-05T07:47:19+00:00 Dear all,
Has anyone got any progress with this issue?
I had an almost a month of TypeCover working (most of the time) and lately it stopped again. I have not found any regularity of such events. This costed me lots of frustration and time and decided to return this faulty hardware. I am very disappointed with Microsoft and its products. It is hard to believe that 7th iteration of SurfacePro can have such fundamental issues!
Going back to my trusty old ThinkPad which, apparently, has superior quality and reliability.
With regrets,
P
