my brother just bought the surface pro 7, and initially the keyboard works, but after closing the type cover, once he returns, the keyboard does not work anymore, the driver cannot even be found. We tried all fixes, nothing except factory reset worked. It happened again today, a day later and we are perplexed. we cannot continue to factory reset every day for this keyboard type cover to work, what can be done??

After returning my 2nd Surface Pro 7,  my 3rd one worked fine. That is until an hour ago. Now it does not power my type cover. I tried the type cover with my wife's Surface Pro and it works. I think this is a general issue that Microsoft is not aware of / hasn't been able to solve yet.

I guess my experience means that even if you exchange your device with a new one, this problem can come out of nowhere.

    I'm in the same boat.

Tried all the recommendations... Still not working. Driver disappears. Keyboard won't work. Please help. New pro 7 is useless without the keyboard.

    Hi Gerald,

Had this same issue develop on me today.  Surface Pro 6, just updated to v1909 and the type cover suddenly stopped working.

Ran the diagnostic tool but noticed it didn’t request any tests of the hardware keyboard.

After trying a variety of solutions, I hard rebooted (power and left volume key) into the bios.  Here i toggles off and on the external typecover port.  Upon restart the typecover now works.

I suspect something in the updates inverted the power controls for the port and manually toggling it turned it back on.

Hope this helps others during their debugging process.

    Hi there

I have the same problem as above. I have tried all the recommended corrective actions by the problem persists. The Surface  recognises the type cover in Device Settings, but will not let me remove the device? This is a major issue having spent £80 on a keyboard that does not work!

Same problem! In my case it appears the driver disappears when plug in certain USB devices, still trying to narrow down which ones. Looking through device manager some of the USB drivers report as dated 2006!

Only way I can consistently fix it is do a complete reset.
