Surface Pro 4 battery drain while OFF

I have a HUGE battery drain while power off (not hibernating)  at least 5-10 percent per day.   I windows updates done.   I used to think it was because of the keyboard being attached. but I have switched to a Brydge Keyboard.  Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix?

Another solution I've found is to shut down the computer the old way - regular shutdown instead of hybrid shutdown.

You can use this shortcut:

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 3 /c "Full Shutdown"

  • shutdown.exe can execute the various sleed/hibernate commands, including the regular shutdown.
  • /s means "shutdown". If we shutdown the normal way, it is a hybrid shutdown (/hybrid)
  • /t 3 means after 3 seconds. If you skip this it's 30 seconds by default.
  • /c "Full shutdown" is a simple comment that will appear in various places as the reason for your shutdown.

Keep in mind it takes a little longer to shutdown this way, and it takes a little longer to start afterwards, but I think the computer doesn't keep some systems active, thus you should see almost no battery drain, even for prolonged times.

That is a good question because the screen will be off.  Before shutting down and all programs are closed, you can do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and select the task manager and look at the processes that are still running at that moment and you may find 'something' but doubtful.

The power sub-system could also have a defect causing that as well and not actually shutting off the machine when it is supposed to be off.

The task manager may give you a clue when all programs are shut down.  If you can't find anything listed, it is possible you may need to contact customer support to get the machine swapped out.

    I format my surface pro clean off and without install windows. I tried to boot it with Ubuntu and check the battery status. Unfortunately the battery still keep draining even with or without windows installing. So now it is hardware related either is firmware useless or the battery damage but the weird part is it is the SSD side that keep on felt warm and not the battery side. It is as if the SSD cannot be shut down completely by the firmware or whatever. But based on the age of the devices, seriously doubt Microsoft will care anymore.

    You are correct.  I have had this problem a while.  It did NOT have it when I first started using the device.  It started shortly before the warranty was up.  Now out of warranty,  MS won't do a damn thing.  I drove over an hour to the nearest store, and I was told that they would only replace my unit with a $450 charge.  Seriously?  I guess that MS wants to get a guarantee of about $1000 bucks a year out of everybody.     These devices are really not serviceable the way they are built.  They saved a fortune by assembling them the way the do. They meant for these units to be disposable.   I suspect some kind of software fault, before hardware, because otherwise the device seems ok. But, what the hell do I know.  I suppose it could be a defect with a timer on it to activate when the warranty expires.  I put nothing past them.  I am extremely unhappy with MS.   My next computer will not be from MS.  Bill Gates doesn't need my money to pay the crew on his yacht for 10 minutes with my $1000 bucks.

    I having the same problem.

    After flickering problem, Microcosft replace the device with refurbish one.

    But now there is the Battery Draining and externally Hot even while complete shutdown.

    Microsoft dont want to take responsibility for that even its seems to be an hardware problem.

    May be someone know what could be the hardware problem? 

    May be I can open the tablet and try to fix it? Could be a short circle?
