I have a HUGE battery drain while power off (not hibernating)  at least 5-10 percent per day.   I windows updates done.   I used to think it was because of the keyboard being attached. but I have switched to a Brydge Keyboard.  Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix?

Thanks!

Thanks Victor_S

Another solution I've found is to shut down the computer the old way - regular shutdown instead of hybrid shutdown.

You can use this shortcut:

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 3 /c "Full Shutdown"

  • shutdown.exe can execute the various sleed/hibernate commands, including the regular shutdown.
  • /s means "shutdown". If we shutdown the normal way, it is a hybrid shutdown (/hybrid)
  • /t 3 means after 3 seconds. If you skip this it's 30 seconds by default.
  • /c "Full shutdown" is a simple comment that will appear in various places as the reason for your shutdown.

Keep in mind it takes a little longer to shutdown this way, and it takes a little longer to start afterwards, but I think the computer doesn't keep some systems active, thus you should see almost no battery drain, even for prolonged times.

That is a good question because the screen will be off.  Before shutting down and all programs are closed, you can do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and select the task manager and look at the processes that are still running at that moment and you may find 'something' but doubtful.

The power sub-system could also have a defect causing that as well and not actually shutting off the machine when it is supposed to be off.

The task manager may give you a clue when all programs are shut down.  If you can't find anything listed, it is possible you may need to contact customer support to get the machine swapped out.

    Hi,

Hey .. a MS representative .. another one, glad to read from you

We try so many things now after two replacement with each time a set of new problems  (screen flickering, weird power cfg, screen light problem, battery drain and so on ..)

Even if I work in the IT field (I am a IT claims adjuster) i tried to follow the process (opening a case, let a MS representative connect to my computer, etc ..). I don' t remember is it test that, I don't have the previous SP anymore.

each time verdict is the same : a total OS refresh then .. you got to  send it back for replacement :(

Now I received my "new" replacement and went for a test before using it again (I did not dare to use it in my real professional work, juste testing) and you guess what .. could not even apply update with the SP4 I received, fresh, just setup, no apps ..

Strange result with power cfg /batteryreport (don't know why bu w'ell see after new test set)

Obliged to redo a complete fresh install (setup usb key from mediacreationtool  and drivers) :(

Now it is in test ... it means that I shut it down with shutdown /s command (we are sure that I is in a real shutdown stat like this) and I'll wait for a few days (probably a week) to see what happens.

I run this test with my other laptop and after a week I still got 100% battery so we'll se.

I will run drag tool also .. we'll see..

One year now I got this ... "computer" without being able to use it .. really

I fell like a f.. beta tester for a product which is far from being a cheap device (I got a cheap chinese crap for which run like a charm !) .. Do you think this acceptable for such a product ? really ?

Anyway, as I was not able to truthfully use my surface I bought another computer (other brand .. perfect for 8 month now without battery loss) if this time this surface appears to run well I could not image to trust it as a main computer, could juste be a backup .. just in case

I trust MS and bought 3 Win Phone 10 .. MS Abandoned the game. I bought a surface (nice looking product) and was unable to use it seriously

I spend my time to test and play with the box to send it back to MS ..  Hey guy this is not one of my claims cases (It might became one of these in fact), I got enough crap in our lab to play with and I just need a COMPUTER (a real one).

Why don't you take these SP for a serious test drive and reply with a real and honest answer .. rather than saying test this or that ?!

We are customers .. not test guys in you beta test playfied ..

In my job .. If i f..up like this I got to refund my customers .. seriously man ! 2 replacements in less than one year .. what a hell it is ..

    Hello Jean,

For us to be able to isolate the problem's cause, we need you to run a diagnostic check on the device, you can do that by using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.

    Let us know the result.

    Thank you.
