Surface Pro 4 battery drain while OFF

I have a HUGE battery drain while power off (not hibernating)  at least 5-10 percent per day.   I windows updates done.   I used to think it was because of the keyboard being attached. but I have switched to a Brydge Keyboard.  Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix?

Another solution I've found is to shut down the computer the old way - regular shutdown instead of hybrid shutdown.

You can use this shortcut:

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 3 /c "Full Shutdown"

  • shutdown.exe can execute the various sleed/hibernate commands, including the regular shutdown.
  • /s means "shutdown". If we shutdown the normal way, it is a hybrid shutdown (/hybrid)
  • /t 3 means after 3 seconds. If you skip this it's 30 seconds by default.
  • /c "Full shutdown" is a simple comment that will appear in various places as the reason for your shutdown.

Keep in mind it takes a little longer to shutdown this way, and it takes a little longer to start afterwards, but I think the computer doesn't keep some systems active, thus you should see almost no battery drain, even for prolonged times.

That is a good question because the screen will be off.  Before shutting down and all programs are closed, you can do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and select the task manager and look at the processes that are still running at that moment and you may find 'something' but doubtful.

The power sub-system could also have a defect causing that as well and not actually shutting off the machine when it is supposed to be off.

The task manager may give you a clue when all programs are shut down.  If you can't find anything listed, it is possible you may need to contact customer support to get the machine swapped out.

    Unfortunately being still in warranty period does not seems to solve this battery problem.

    MS will send you another refurbished device but you 'll continue o have the problem.

    I have since the very 1st time and I changed once (for a screen flickering problem) and the battery drain is still there (with a power cfg behaviour).

    I did not use my SP4 for sev. month and I need to use it again and with all these behaviours makes me think to switch to a reliable machine.

    Without solution from MS (and I am afraid that nothing will happens) I am planning to initiate a lawsuit with insurance which could cover the cost.

    Are you still in warranty period? Unfortunately, my device is out of warranty now. If I send it back for replacement, I would have to pay a quite substantial fee. Does anyone know whether Microsoft refunds the fee,  if that doesn't fix the problem? Or would I need to initiate a lawsuit?

    Hi,

    The question is not to find a work around to  a technical issue which seems there for a long time not.

    I did not pay a bunch of money to play the beta tester for MS.

    ? 

    I just want to be able to use my machine as it is supposed to work.. When I want it to shutdown down it should go this way and go completely down.

    I have 3 laptops and tablets but this pricy piece of crap is the only one to behave like this.

    Most of all we are not talking about a weird chinese cheap computer running under windows but of a machine entirely designed by MICROSOFT which is supposed to mastering the whole process.

    It is unbelievable that when you contact MS you have someone who connect to your computer, exploring it without no conviction and said (each time) : you have to reinstall and then send it back ..

    According to what you can read (here) it is not s.t. that can be solved with a replacement neither .. Why are you offering that ? Gain time, hoping that you client will not move ?

    Is it that MS Expertise ?

    Please MS refund .. you are unable to manage and deal correctly with your own devices behavior
