Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

You need to install the driver pack from microsoft  provided a link for first, restart, then then type cover should show up or atleast it did for me. And when changing the wacom device driver i believe it was like usb input device or generic usb or something. It was the only generic looking device driver option available after selecting browse from list

Did you try bringing the device back to sleep, and starting again?

Also, did you try hibernate, then start-up?

With regards to the switch of the driver, what is the device name that you chose?

Wacom Device seems to me like the touch-screen function/tool...

In a lot of our scenario, when the touch keyboard is not detected, the driver shown is not surface type cover under keyboard (input devices), instead its a Generic Input device.

    Need more clarifications if possible.

    I HAVE THE SOLUTION!!!

    Hello everyone :).

Ok, so after batteling with this one myself for some time on my surface pro 4, i have FINALLY discovered a fix to get the typecover working again. The issue can be resolved by updating the typecover wacom device driver to the generic driver version.

Please repeat the following steps to victory:

    1. Go to settings - Devices - devices and printers under related settings
    2. Under devices, push and hold on "surface type cover" and select properties.
    3. Select hardware tab
    4. Select Wacom Device - click properties
    5. Select change settings button
    6. Select 2nd tab "driver"
    7. Select update driver
    8. Select bottom option browse for driver software
    9. Select let me choose from list
    10. Select top option generic usb or whatever option that doesnt say wacom.
    11. Select next to apply the update
    12. Voila! Your Typecover now works again!

IMPORTANT!! - After you apply this fix, if you use a driver update program it will say that a "USB input device" driver is out of date, this is the driver we just reverted to a generic driver for our typecover to work so do not update this driver!

I highly suggest you update all your driver's firtst before applying this fix, then you will know which driver to ignore from getting updated in the future. However you can always reapply the fix if it happens again.

If typecover isnt listed under devices after selecting devices and printers in settings, you need to first make sure typecover is plugged in ang lights are working (just not responding to anything), and download and install the driver/firmware zip for your particular installed version of windows 10 at microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49498

To find out which version to download, type in winver in the search box with your on screen keyboard and press enter. Itnwill show you which version to download. Once youce done this the type cover should show up after restarting your computer so you can follow the above steps.

I hope this works for everyone, if your typecover responds in UEFI but not after windows has booted due to a microsoft firmware update then this fix should work for you.  Cheers

Just do as what i proposed in the earlier post.

Leave keyboard plugged in, rotate screen to portrait mode, make sure the screen rotates.

unplug keyboard from surface while portrait, then rotate screen back.

you can connect the keyboard back and it should work right after.

i can only narrow this issue down to the loading of driver and the firmware detection of the keyboard.

i dont think microsoft is ever going to fix this.

The "rotating" works on my Pro 3....

I rotated my pro 3 to view a file (with typecover attached), after a while, system noticed that a typecover was discovered, and it started to work....

I will reboot later to test whether this is temporarily...  (I guess so)

my pro 3 with old typecover (1st or 2nd gen) went back to normal now....  Not work right after startup, but it will be activated after several mins...

finally... after more that 1 year... and I'd bought a new laptop already....
