I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I am relatively sure it is some kind of driver or firmware issue. My Surface Pro 4 worked perfectly up to one of the updates, then the keyboard never worked again.
Microsoft tried many things even up to a complete reload of Windows, nothing worked. In the end, I purchased a new Surface Pro 7.
An interesting note is that the keyboard cover from the Surface Pro 4 is now attached to the Surface Pro 7 and working perfectly.
The keyboard still works fine
I have disabled updates.
Yes I have the files you mentioned in my drivers list
As i said I tried deleting all keyboard drivers and tried reinstalling them from different update packages till I finally managed to get it work. I have kept a registry and drivers backup, but the moderator wont let me give my mail to the public...
This did not work on my Pro 4. The old keyboard still does not work (sometimes it works after 8-10 attempts at disconnecting and then reconnecting it). The new keyboard works every time I connect it.
Just do as what i proposed in the earlier post.
Leave keyboard plugged in, rotate screen to portrait mode, make sure the screen rotates.
unplug keyboard from surface while portrait, then rotate screen back.
you can connect the keyboard back and it should work right after.
i can only narrow this issue down to the loading of driver and the firmware detection of the keyboard.
i dont think microsoft is ever going to fix this.
The "rotating" works on my Pro 3....
I rotated my pro 3 to view a file (with typecover attached), after a while, system noticed that a typecover was discovered, and it started to work....
I will reboot later to test whether this is temporarily... (I guess so)
