Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I found the below solution and tested successfully:

    https://blogs.blackmarble.co.uk/adawson/2019/06/07/surface-pro-3-type-cover-not-working-after-windows-10-1903-image-applied/

    My specific scenario:

-mdt server with both 1803 and 1903 images with latest updates applied

-imaging a previously working surface with either of these nukes the typecover

-following the above guide restored access with no reboot required.

I'm going to clear out all surface drivers from my mdt deployment and push only the latest to see if it fixes the root issue.

Update on the SP4 I've been supporting:

After updating to 1903 and pulling down all available updates (incl. drivers, etc,) there was no change to the device- keyboard still didn't work*.

After ~24 hours of being power on and off through normal use, the keyboard was mysteriously properly detected and began working normally.  I believe a firmware update became available after the initial course of updates that come down after installing 1903, but I don't have the device in front of me.

To me, this substantiates a firmware level defect.  Of course, by this point, the device's owner has purchase a Dell Latitude 2-in-1.  :-\  Ah well, my faith in MS hardware is shot and I couldn't call the device "reliable" at this point.  The battery will probably start swelling any day now, anyway.

*Didn't Work meaning lit up, but was not properly detected in the Device Manager.  I.E.. the whole point of this thread.

Good news, there is no battery swelling issue. Issue is with the firmware which doesnt recognize the type cover. Before it completely stopped recognizing they keyboard, mine worked for few days on and off and then I think the firmware root files were completely corrupted. There need to be an update to fix files at root level, which never happened.

Last week, I was running creators update and for a second it recognized the device, but immediately with few auto refresh in device manager, HID keyboard was back and type cover was out of luck. Drivers on this laptop are crazy, for eg. there are 3 display drivers -one by MS, One by surface and one by Intel (you can see them under display drivers) and dont know which of these take the dominance. There are 6 vendor defined device drivers auto loaded, but there isnt anything connected (if you uninstall and scan for changes, these load again, like there are connected devices).

I had the same issue with my surface type cover keyboard.

I was very disappointed because yesterday my surface fell to the ground and I thought that I should buy a new keyboard but the Two Button Shutdown method explained here: Keyboard Problems with Surface Tablets, worked for me. Important note is that you should hold the buttons at least 15 seconds until the UEFI screen appears.

Needless to say I had just updated Windows and I think this was causing the problem, not dropping my surface.

I hope this method works for everyone that have the same issue.

    I HAVE A WORKING SOLUTION !

After one morning when I woke up and there was no power going to my typecover, not working even in BIOS. I did all the things that were suggested in the forums. I put the typecover in the fridge, uninstall and install drivers, update and firmware and nothing worked (as it was stated in the forums, but I had to try).

I remember that when I lost all the functionality and power to my typecover the Surfave Pro 4 battery was drained to zero. In some forums people suggested that the problem might be caused by the battery.

Those are the following steps I made to fix my typecover problem :

1 - Unplugged the typecover and uninstall its drivers from "Device Manager"

2 - Install Battery Eater (http://batteryeater.com/) and run it until the battery dies.

3 - Leave the SP4 for 24 hours without any power.

4 - Put back the typecover and the charger to the drained SP4.

    5 - Press the Power****VOILÀ

This proves that patience and fasting solves any problem. Have a great reunion with you loved typecovers !

Does not work unfortunately. Microsoft continues to ignore the issue.
