Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

After someone said on one of the many threads about surface update issues that another update was out I gave it a try. It took around 8 hours to process the updates often sticking at 21% for hours before slowly moving on. The final result is nothing, no improvement, typecover still detected as HID Keyboard device complete and utter tosh. I have spent hours on this and now I have sold the working type cover and bought a bluetooth cover.

I don't know what sequence of events is causing these issues or even if microsoft can fix them, but as far as I can see ever from the very launch of surface devices they have had problems. If you have never encountered issues then lucky you, but there are some scenarios of hundreds of use cases where updates fail. This is down to MS trying to automate fixes and rolling them up into windows update so they cannot be rolled back. In the old days before over the air updates were easy, product testing was more in depth as the quick get it out the door if there is a problem we can just update it mentality didn't exist. In fact if products never got updated and were working to start with they would never then subsequently break with some improvement update that is just thrown out there. Offset this though with telemetry from busted updates and MS must have a good idea of how many device they are shafting. It a lot I bet and these figures are hidden away else no one would buy an expensive device that is unreliable. Poor form indeed.

Following some updates 14 September 2018, including firmware, I can no longer use my cover keyboard.

Tried all the common troubleshooting suggestions to no avail.

This is the only issue I appear to have.

I turned on the SP4 and the cover keyboard was working fine. went to Windows Update and saw some updates waiting so clicked install. I Watched the updates install including a firmware, indicated by a coloured progress bar under the logo.

When the machine restarted, no keyboard. not possible to be a hardware issue.

Apparently there were two firmware updates made.
