I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

Same problem on two surfaces! Both had updates since neither my roommate or I had used them in a few months. I turned mine on, used it for an hour, saw there was updates. We both updated and had no keyboard after the updates finished. So we are sitting here with $2500 invested something they broke, and our only option is to pay $450 a piece for a replacement since the warranty is up! I was thinking about upgrading to the new sp6, once it's available, doubtful now!

Same problem. Wasted time trying all those useless methods. It happened after an update. Keyboard is fine as it works well with other SF4. My warranty is over and the machine is just 2 years plus. Feeling sad. So many people are having this issue. I'm tired. Will stick to Apple in future. Currently using a BT keyboard and hoping some miracle updates from MS will solve this issue.
Doesn't matter to me now its sold. Appalling service......
