Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

My daughters SP4 has the same problem, no driver for the type cover is present. When I hook it up to an ancient Surface RT, the type cover works fine.

So the firmware in the SP4 is messed up by an update and there is only one thing we can do about it: never again buy a device from Microsoft!

I have had this same issue for a while. I finally spent my whole day today fighting with it and finally got my Surface Pro 4 to work with the type cover again. I don't know if this will work for any of the other surface models. Step one I uninstalled all of the windows updates that I could by going to settings>update and security>Update History>Uninstall Updates. I uninstalled any windows 10 update it would let me. I then restarted and allowed it to begin auto downloading the updates again. During that time I went into my device manager by right clicking the start menu and selecting device manager. Under firmware I uninstalled "surface embedded controller firmware", "surface system aggregator", and "surface uefi". I then installed all the updates that windows 10 needed and restarted however many times I had to. When that was done I went back to the device manager and went to those same 3 firmwares and right clicked them and told them to update. Each one downloaded a new update. When all three were done a windows alert popped up telling me that the type cover driver was being installed and set up. I then had to disconnect and reconnect the type cover before it finally recognized it and turned on.

I completely lost it when it finally worked because I had kind of accepted that I paid for an overpriced tablet. Hope this works for you. You may need to uninstall and update the firmware more than once because I did, but it was because I was doing things in a kind of random order hoping something would work and when it finally worked it was when i uninstalled and reinstalled the firmware after the win 10 updates.

Good luck and I hope this works for some of you. Why microsoft can't seem to get this to automatically occur without so much user input is beyond me. Makes me yern for the days of manually installing and updating drivers.

    Thanks Alex

but it did not work. Another morning dedicated to trying to solve a Microsoft problem

Well despite it working after numerous shut downs and restarts I turned the computer off for about an hour and when I turned it back on no type cover. However, this does suggest that Microsofts "it's a hardware issue" statement is BS. It is definitely something to do with their firmware.

mine is detected but the v, b, n keys are on the fritz, they only work if I first put the surface pro 4 in tablet mode, open the keyboard and start typing.
