Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I tried all the things above and nothing worked. However a simple fix was able to solve my unresponsive surface pro 4 keyboard.

basically i just dabbed a piece of cotton bud with alcohol and wiped the pins of the keyboard and the connectors that are found in surface pro itself.

Hope this works for you guys.

I did it myself on the advice of the help center's assistant and it did not help. it still does not work. It's an absurd situation. I am forced not to be able to use an accessory that costs so much !!! and they answer me that they are out of warranty assistance !!!

    Hi,

I was able to make my type cover work today (I followed the steps of Patrick below with some tweaking)

    Date/Time of Success: February 17, 2019, 8AM GMT+8

Version Alignment: I'm using the following versions

    1.) Surface Pro 4 (i5 , 8GB)

    2.) Windows 10 Pro 1803 (OS Build 17134.590)

3.) Firmware Versions (from Surface UEFI screen)

    • System UEFI (108.2439.769)
    • SAM Controller (103.1837.257)
    • Intel Management Engine (11.8.56.3522)
    • Touch Firmware (1.107.0.106.28.3)
    • System Embedded Controller (103.2241.256)
    • Infineon dTPM (5.62.3126.2)

Other things I did prior to doing Patrick's Suggestions below:

1.) Checked for latest updates with the following update settings (Semi-Annual Channel with 0 day feature update and 0 day quality update)

2.) Installed latest drivers in https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49498

    SurfacePro4_Win10_17134_1900501_0.msi

(this is what I used data published Jan.30,2019)

3.) Made sure the "auto rotate" screen is functioning correctly (auto rotate to landscape, portrait, etc.). Sometimes I experience it get "stuck" and "auto rotate" is not functioning properly.

4.) In my Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Power Options -> System Settings

I unchecked the "Turn on fast startup (recommended) settings

Exact Steps I did (almost similar to what Patrick did below)

1.) While login inside Windows w/ type cover still attached

    • Forced shutdown (hold the power button for 30 seconds)

2.) While turned off w/ type cover still attached

    • Power + Volume up button (for 15 seconds or 20 seconds). This should boot to your UEFI (just continue pressing until it turns off again

    3.) Turn on normally

At this stage, my type cover back lights turned on, but my keyboard and trackpad is not working (the FN key light turns on and off though)

4.) If you detached and re-attached your type cover, you will get an error

    USB Device Not Recognized

and under the Device Manager screen, you will get exclamation point under Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

    Remove this unknown device

5.) I did #1 and #2 steps again above, but this time, when it booted at UEFI, I went to Devices, and turned off then turn on the "Type Cover Port", then exit

6.) Upon login to Windows, it will somehow recognize the correct & install the drivers

    Hello All,

Yesterday my surface pro 4 did a critical update and i continued working well. However, this morning, my type cover keyboard could not be detected and thus has been unusable for about two hours.

After trying a number of things suggested on the internet, this is what worked for me:

    1. Switch off the computer.
    2. Perform the two button restart i.e. hold the volume up and power button together for about 15 seconds.
    3. The Surface UEFI screen will come up.  On the left side, there is a list. Go to devices.
    4. A list of various devices allowed in your surface will be listed. At the bottom you should see type cover. Swipe the toggle button to the left to switch it off.
    5. Choose exit and restart your surface.
    6. Log in fully to your surface if you have log in credentials.
    7. Shut down the surface.
    8. Perform again the two button restart as described above.
    9. From the surface UEFI screen go to the devices >type cover again and this time swipe the toggle button to the right to switch it on.
    10. Choose exit and restart

This time the type cover should be able to work.

    All the best!

    Patrick
