I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

Installed the update and re-booted SP4 and lo and behold ... nothing ... still not even a glimmer from the keyboard. Managed to acquire a "spare" keyboard from work and lo and behold IT WORKED !!! Tried my old keyboard but still no joy. Swapped keyboards and tried mine (the dud) with another working SP4 and again nothing.
Ah well will continue to swap keyboards and re-boot to see if I can get it to work.
There is an firmware update today for SP4, and it fixed mine...Ow Thank God I've been waiting for this day like almost a year..How about you guys? try to update..i'm writing this on my lovely alcantra type cover in which has been in my drawer for almost a year...I really miss the touch pad, the best touch pad other than mac.

Can you tell us what is the firmware number ?
Can you stop and restart your SF4 with your type cover (with hybernation also), disconnect and connect the type cover and tell us if it still works ?
Does the new firmware solved all the issues (battery drain and type cover) ?

Okay CVince 93, here's the report.
Accidentally my wife took off the type cover, so universe want me to try it anyway. After she took off the type cover, I immediately put it up again, when the machine was on. The result is that the keyboard does not work anymore. So disappointed...
Buuut...then then I took it off and put it back several times. It WORKED..I'm relieved.
Yesterday, it happened again, and I did the same thing and succeeded again.
Today, i'm still writing using type cover.
That's it. I hope this thing doesn't die again 🤞

I’m glad that it worked well with you. Mine is still cold as dead! Almost every day I check for would be answer to this mess Microsoft has put me in! so frustrating!!!

I am not sure about my keyboard because I gave it away because it was useless (after 3 months trying all of the suggested fixes) BUT on Saturday the rotation started working. I think the problem was the sensors did not recognize keyboard was attached.
Hopefully others will be working now. There were so many with the same issue.
Sorry Tiago. Mine misbehaves like this once in a while and everytime i do the above it comes back alive.
