Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

Ok everybody, spread this advice as far and wide as you can.

    This is a known problem.

I took my Surface Pro 4 back to a Microsoft Store. Told them it was a known problem.  Told them all that I had done to fix it. Told them that the Microsoft Community was lit up with similar complaints.

Within 5 minutes the manager agreed to replace my Surface Pro 4 with a refurbished one. Kept the same type cover. After a few initial problems. It's now working well.

A big thank you,  to Microsoft and particularly the Microsoft staff at the store for, taking positive action.

    I hope this helps.

Remember we are real Microsoft is virtual.

Did everything.... I did so many things to my SP4 to try to fix this issue that I decided to reset the device again, in case I did something that prevented the type cover from working. So I did the reset and.... surprise surprise nothing.

    More time wasted that's it.

If someone was able to put it to work, please share your steps.

I followed all these steps.... no luck....

Did anyone else able to make it work?

I'm kinda really tired of this problem is simply ridiculous :(

    Hello All,

Yesterday my surface pro 4 did a critical update and i continued working well. However, this morning, my type cover keyboard could not be detected and thus has been unusable for about two hours.

After trying a number of things suggested on the internet, this is what worked for me:

    1. Switch off the computer.
    2. Perform the two button restart i.e. hold the volume up and power button together for about 15 seconds.
    3. The Surface UEFI screen will come up.  On the left side, there is a list. Go to devices.
    4. A list of various devices allowed in your surface will be listed. At the bottom you should see type cover. Swipe the toggle button to the left to switch it off.
    5. Choose exit and restart your surface.
    6. Log in fully to your surface if you have log in credentials.
    7. Shut down the surface.
    8. Perform again the two button restart as described above.
    9. From the surface UEFI screen go to the devices >type cover again and this time swipe the toggle button to the right to switch it on.
    10. Choose exit and restart

This time the type cover should be able to work.

    All the best!

    Patrick

I ran into this issue two days ago and have tried everything with no luck. (two button start, uninstalling / reinstalling firmware, all the common suggestions online)

It just started working again out of no where.

I've tried detaching and attaching the type cover - works.

    Restarted windows - works

Disconnected dock / power adapter - works

Disconnect dock / power adapter then detached and reattached type cover - works.

I'm not sure what I did but i'll let everyone know what my last actions were.

I did a restore to the earliest restore point. - This didn't fix it.

I left the surface pro on overnight (as far as i know my power options is to never put it to sleep, it's only a shut off of display) so I would assume the sp4 was on the whole night.

This morning it just started working out of no where.

However, like AlexandryKusamajaya said, I checked and there indeed were a few updates as of last night to this morning and here they are:

    Quality Updates:

2019-01 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057) *There was one with the exact same title but was installed Jan 17th so I have no clue what this means* I'm happy to help if anyone has a clue how to find out more
