Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

    Hello All,

Yesterday my surface pro 4 did a critical update and i continued working well. However, this morning, my type cover keyboard could not be detected and thus has been unusable for about two hours.

After trying a number of things suggested on the internet, this is what worked for me:

    1. Switch off the computer.
    2. Perform the two button restart i.e. hold the volume up and power button together for about 15 seconds.
    3. The Surface UEFI screen will come up.  On the left side, there is a list. Go to devices.
    4. A list of various devices allowed in your surface will be listed. At the bottom you should see type cover. Swipe the toggle button to the left to switch it off.
    5. Choose exit and restart your surface.
    6. Log in fully to your surface if you have log in credentials.
    7. Shut down the surface.
    8. Perform again the two button restart as described above.
    9. From the surface UEFI screen go to the devices >type cover again and this time swipe the toggle button to the right to switch it on.
    10. Choose exit and restart

This time the type cover should be able to work.

    All the best!

    Patrick

    Hi CVince 93,

I already reboot my system like 3-4 times, it still worked I really want to keep it that way, I looked again the firmware number, that I wasn't realize before, it dated November 2018, but it's installed today. Maybe I got delayed update? I don't know..i give you this screenshot about my historical update.

actually i'm really afraid to take-off my typecover, I really want to keep it worked at least until next week, because I really need it, i'll keep inform to this forum after I try.

Type cover is still dead/unresponsive in UEFI. The Diagnostic tool found and did nothing. I also disagree with your assessment. A hardware problem implies something PHYSICALLY wrong. My SP4 hasn't left my dock in weeks. Also, without the correct drivers, the type cover is unable to communicate with the Surface. The reason I believe this is because I had a windows app that could execute commands by mutli-point touch and swipes. That app is also suddenly not working.

I did a full windows reset last night and that did nothing. SO DO NOT DO A WINDOWS RESET TO FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!! DO NOT!! IT WILL NOT FIX YOUR PROBLEM!!! It will just add to your headache. This product has been nothing but a headache since the day I got it.

    hey there,

I'm having the same problem. I've done every instruction i could find but none worked! Microsoft NEED TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THIS MESS!!! It has cost me so much to buy their stuff! for goodness sake Microsoft your products are so expensive to buy, DO SOMETHING!!!!

There is an firmware update today for SP4, and it fixed mine...Ow Thank God I've been waiting for this day like almost a year..How about you guys? try to update..i'm writing this on my lovely alcantra type cover in which has been in my drawer for almost a year...I really miss the touch pad, the best touch pad other than mac.

    Hi AlexandryKusumajaya,

Can you tell us what is the firmware number ?

Can you stop and restart your SF4 with your type cover (with hybernation also), disconnect and connect the type cover and tell us if it still works ?

Does the new firmware solved all the issues (battery drain and type cover) ?

    Thx
