I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

There is an firmware update today for SP4, and it fixed mine...Ow Thank God I've been waiting for this day like almost a year..How about you guys? try to update..i'm writing this on my lovely alcantra type cover in which has been in my drawer for almost a year...I really miss the touch pad, the best touch pad other than mac.
like many others, if I let my sp3 drain past dead battery, then plug it in with type cover attached, it will load the driver and the keyboard works until either it goes to sleep or I detach the cover. the driver then disappears and only tablet mode operates.
Where is the fix MS????
My surface pro 4 type cover just stopped working also after an update. I spent the whole night and tried all the methods. Its still not working. Such a waste of time. So many people started to have the same problem a few months ago, microsoft didnt try to fix a thing. Its very disappointing. I will make complaints here in Australia. And Im not going to buy any surface products anymore.
seriously?? anyone can confirm this, before i buy sp3 typecover? i would prefer sp5 typecover though, if it worked..
Had same problem, tried re-booting, re-building and updating drivers. Tried deleting and re-installing keyboard from device manager - all to no avail. Eventually took my personal Surface pro 4 to work and swapped my (not working keyboard) with a working keyboard and lo and behold BOTH keyboards worked!!! My non-working keyboard on a working Surface Pro 3 and their keyboard on MY surface Pro 4. BOTH WORKED !!!! Re-tried my keyboard back on my Surface Pro and nothing - still not working. I am struggling to rationalise this now. Any ideas????
