Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

If you have thoroughly cleaned the contacts, yes.

In my case it definitely is the cover. It doesn't work on any other Surface, and another cover works fine on the problem machine.

Out of warranty, should I just toss it and buy a new one?

    From the above link...

I tried the process of completely powering down and draining the battery beyond the ‘battery empty logo’ screen, and then power up using charger or dock. It works!

After hibernating or shutdown, it failed to work again. Requiring somewhat a repeat to the process.

I suspect its to do with the battery life, but my battery life is only at 12.5%!

i didnt have this problem only until very recently, say about mid december of 2018.

    Hey guys,

this procedure works for me every single time.

    pls try it.

    regards

    Patrick

    Hello All,

Yesterday my surface pro 4 did a critical update and i continued working well. However, this morning, my type cover keyboard could not be detected and thus has been unusable for about two hours.

After trying a number of things suggested on the internet, this is what worked for me:

    1. Switch off the computer.
    2. Perform the two button restart i.e. hold the volume up and power button together for about 15 seconds.
    3. The Surface UEFI screen will come up.  On the left side, there is a list. Go to devices.
    4. A list of various devices allowed in your surface will be listed. At the bottom you should see type cover. Swipe the toggle button to the left to switch it off.
    5. Choose exit and restart your surface.
    6. Log in fully to your surface if you have log in credentials.
    7. Shut down the surface.
    8. Perform again the two button restart as described above.
    9. From the surface UEFI screen go to the devices >type cover again and this time swipe the toggle button to the right to switch it on.
    10. Choose exit and restart

This time the type cover should be able to work.

    All the best!

    Patrick
