Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

Dear all, I'm an italian victim of the type cover issue. Today I read this

    https://www.windowsblogitalia.com/2018/12/surface-pro-4-problemi-firmware-sostituzione/

(sorry for italiano, but please translate). It seems that MS will replace free charge the devices affected. Is there somebody able to confirm? maybe a fake news? I'll try to contact the official support....

Thanks for that, very interesting. However, I wonder if it is something the MS Italia have decided, or a worldwide exchange. Had anyone seen anything like this anywhere else?

dont know about the italian blog but i see that the sp4 also has a screen issue and there was a comment on microsoft community about msf offering some sort of replacement. ( cant find tge link right now)

my wife's sp4 is away on holiday with us and the type cover has been working since i fiddled around with rotation lock auto/ off just before we left - unfortunately - i dont remember exactly what i did and its probably a coincidence anyway.

the only other thing that happened - around the 3rd dec was that the psu failed and i had to get a replacement in a hurry - and that meant a msf oem one.

anyway, have the Motu bt keyboard with us as well

Same issued occurred to me after updates on 03 Dec. Keyboard and screen rotation no longer work. have tried re-installing/updating drivers, uninstalled updates and upgraded to windows 10 1809 all to no avail. I'm confident its not a hardware fault as whenever i attach the keyboard to the surface the device manager automatically refreshes and shows "surface type cover filter device" indicating that it knows the device is connected.

Not really sure what there is left to try as i'm very confident this has something to do with a bad windows update. Extremely annoying none the less. The fact the screen rotation has also stopped working indicates that this a wider issue than just the keyboard.

    Hello All,

Yesterday my surface pro 4 did a critical update and i continued working well. However, this morning, my type cover keyboard could not be detected and thus has been unusable for about two hours.

After trying a number of things suggested on the internet, this is what worked for me:

    1. Switch off the computer.
    2. Perform the two button restart i.e. hold the volume up and power button together for about 15 seconds.
    3. The Surface UEFI screen will come up.  On the left side, there is a list. Go to devices.
    4. A list of various devices allowed in your surface will be listed. At the bottom you should see type cover. Swipe the toggle button to the left to switch it off.
    5. Choose exit and restart your surface.
    6. Log in fully to your surface if you have log in credentials.
    7. Shut down the surface.
    8. Perform again the two button restart as described above.
    9. From the surface UEFI screen go to the devices >type cover again and this time swipe the toggle button to the right to switch it on.
    10. Choose exit and restart

This time the type cover should be able to work.

    All the best!

    Patrick
