Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

    I stop trying.

About 3 weeks ago, I can chat with the Microsoft team officer. They tried to help me, they accessed my laptop remotely. They did reinstall, checking my device manager, restore, and everything else. In the end, they cannot help me to solve the surface top cover issues. He thought this is not a software failure, because the issues cannot solve even after restoring the laptop to its original software version.

I bought the Bluetooth keyboard already. I throw away my surface top cover keyboard because it's not working, only the warning of the USB malfunction keeps popping on the screen.

I think the problem is the magnet connection on the surface and is not the surface top cover keyboard problem (just my opinion).

That was the end of my surface top cover keyboard. I said bye-bye.

Well, after getting a new type cover, it also doesn't work.

After the screen glitch recall, this is very frustrating, as Microsoft support's only conclusion was "it must be some kind of hardware issue, we don't know what, all we can offer you is a small trade-in credit on a new or refurbished device" and I can only chuckle to think that Microsoft's response to a product failing twice in like five years due to built-in hardware failures is "go ahead and buy another one, you silly rube!".

Something is off in this claim though: My old Surface type cover works fine! If it weren't missing a few keys, I'd just use it, but the point is, any claim of this being a hardware issue stops making sense when an older type cover works with the device.

I just found a solution that works (at least for me) and it's easy to try:

    1. Detach type cover
    2. Go to Settings > Devices > USB > Untick Stop devices when my screen is off to help save battery.
    3. Attach type cover
