Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

    Same situation.

Type cover for Surface Pro 4 just stopped working. Not even a recent (within 3 days) update to point to, it just stopped working, as did screen auto-rotation.

It shows up in the device manager, and a Surface Pro 3 type cover works on this device, while the SP4 type cover works with my old Surface! The SP4 type cover's touchpd works in UEFI, but no keys.

Clearly there's some software disruption going on between the device and accessory, but no idea what. Given the auto-rotate isn't working, something to do with the sensors seems a reasonable guess. How tf has Microsoft not done something about this yet? Good lord, this is ridiculous.

Im wondering how many people had a Bluetooth device (mouse, etc) active, as I've had issues before with the type cover not working while a Bluetooth mouse was active.

Im also curious about how many people suffering this bug were also subject to the warranty return for the screen bug - a bit of planned obsolescence perhaps? Would explain why MS isn't doing a damn thing about it - "its not a bug, its a feature!".

I have a SP4 as well and can confirm it does not allow a UEFI downgrade, only a rollback, which did not help. Attempting to update the drivers with those in the cab file results in Windows pointing out the current drivers are the best for the system and only a driver update via the official windows update.

Same issue here. I have SP4 and have tried all suggested tricks, excluding a full reset or reinstallation but so far nothing has worked. I am not in the mood to risk losing my data and still not have it working, as is the case for most here...

I bought a second keyboard since, in the beginning, a thought it might be a faulty keyboard. It is not working either, so I believe like most here that it is a driver issue, which makes it all even more frustrating!

Reading all the comments of customers with the same issue for so long I am baffled how Microsoft can just simply ignore the issue, which must be relatively easy to solve. Or if it is not easy, at least be honest a communicate what is going on.

I assume most people buy the surface pro for the tablet-like features in a laptop but if the keyboard does not work it is just a really overpriced and annoying small-screen laptop with a Bluetooth keyboard.

Microsoft, please do something or shame on you!

I finally found an option that worked, so I'm posting to this very old thread in case it helps anyone else, given that this issue continues to plague people. Apologies if I'm repeating instructions that have already been posted - I've gone through most of the 65 pages but probably not all of them.

I tried everything and was on the verge of buying a new bluetooth keyboard when I realised that I had misunderstood one option that finally solved this for me (lightbulb moment when reading Surface keyboard suddenly stopped working - Super User).

The missed step for me is that there are two ways to use the "Volume Up + Power" function. The first allows access to the UEFI screen by holding down both buttons until the screen comes up, at which point you can turn on and off the Cover Keyboard option. This has been explained everywhere and was of no help to me.

The second "Volume Up + Power" function completely resets firmware by holding both buttons for ~20 seconds, even after the UEFI screen pops up. For me the UEFI screen came up twice and went away before the Surface shut itself down completely, and when I booted it again the type cover was back to normal operation after a week of stuffing around.

I don't know whether this will prove successful for anyone else, but fingers crossed you can feel the same sense of relief (and slowly fading anger) that I am now.

Here is something that has worked for me. I am really not sure how this has worked but it has. I ran the surface diagnostic tool and after that the keyboard turned on. After the surface pro3 went to sleep the keyboard stopped working again. I tried the diagnostic tool again but this time it didn't work right away. I turned off the sleep setting, kept it plugged in and just waited. Eventually the keyboard turned on. Not sure if this will help anyone else but try the diagnostic tool and turn off the sleep function. Hopefully the keyboard will eventually connect.

I take this back...can't get the keyboard to work anymore.
