Unfortunately these steps did do work for me. I really believe the type cover port is bad in my case. What I really need is instructions on how to replace that port.
Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.
I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

2021-07-15T07:26:08+00:00 Sorry to hear that didnt work for you. Ive always had success provided the power is plugged in when reenabling the port in the bios.
It is phenomenally poor that this issue, which reoccurs for me after most updates, still persists.

2021-07-15T03:21:48+00:00 Well, I see I am not the only one. My keyboard stopped working a couple days ago. I am positive that coincided with the most recent update. Tried all the tricks and nothing. I have a surface pro3. Shame on you Microsoft. Get this fixed.

2021-07-15T01:23:27+00:00 It's not working for me. Now my keyboard totally off, no back light anymore. After restore and many other suggestion steps. I feel so stupid to deal with this surface keyboard.

2021-07-14T20:49:16+00:00 Ive been having this problem on and off after windows updates. I was looking for a permanent solution but I have found an approach which has always worked for me until the next update.
- Shut down the surface and boot into bios power +vol up
- Under devices disable the typecover port.
- Restart.
- Ensure the surface is plugged in to the mains (I have no idea why but this has always failed if this step is skipped)
- Shutdown
- Boot into bios activate the typecover
- Restart
- while booting tap a key that has no effect on the boot process. I use fn as it lights.
- The typecover should now work.
To be clear this is not a hardware fault, the physical circumstances of my surface can remain constant, plugged in on a desk and the type cover will still stop working post update. Similarly the physical state of the surface is not altered in the above steps and yet I have always had success.
