If only there were a tech company, with all the proprietary information we don't have access to, who could figure it out.
Good thought, but is there any incentive, other than to prove that Microsoft don't care ?

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I've been having the same issue for a looong time.
My work took delivery of a Surface pro 7 and I've been nominated to give a rundown of the performance etc
one of the first things on my list was the keyboard and how this had stopped functioning after an update
I have just swapped the keyboards over with the following results.
The Pro 4 KB works in the Pro 7 device
The Pro 7 KB works in the Pro 4 Device
When I swap them back the Pro 4 device KB doesn't work????
This seems to suggest that the keyboard is ok, the keyboard interface is ok, but they don't want to talk to each other.
I'm thinking it's a Bluetooth issue?
any ideas where to start?
If I understand you correctly you don't seem to have the usual issue as the pro7 keyboard should not have worked on the pro4 either.
The keyboard connectors are a proprietary type of USB I believe not Bluetooth
I expect only Microsoft can solve the problem with a driver rewrite or patch, but as they conveniently won't recognise the issue they don't need to fix it.

Thanks for the suggestion, we'll give it a try.
