Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I had the same issue, tried all suggestions but none worked.

Finally decided to do a fresh install using Windows 10 build 1809, got the keyboard working again perfectly.

I'm not having the latest windows updates but hell at least the type cover works again.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I really want to get the SP4 working the way it should. One of our other Surfaces has a docking station and a blue tooth keyboard and mouse. That setup works fine, but we don't ever move that Surface around. The other ones are more mobile and the Type Cover keyboard is one of the reasons that we originally bought 3 surfaces at various times.

    Anyway, thanks for your reply.....

Hi Rich, I feel your pain and confusion. I eventually gave up on My SP4 keyboard and bought a Brydge+ keyboard that works a treat.

I have the same issue. I tried the same fixes as mentioned including cleaning the connections. The keyboard does not work when looking at the UEFI. The only additional information that I can add is that we have multiple surfaces and I can take the type cover from the Pro 4 to other surfaces and they work and I also tried a working type cover from one of the other's surface and it did not work in the surface 4.

So do this mean that there is a 100% hardware problem with the Type Cover connector installed in the Surface Pro 4? If so how much does it cost to repair or replace that component and where should I send it to be fixed? Or can a new connector be shipped and installed by me into the Surface 4?

    Thanks

Greetings to all fellow type cover sufferers,

My pro 4 type cover stopped working a good while ago. I didn't notice exactly when because I don't use it that often.

Like many of you I have tried all the weird and wonderful solutions and even went as far as a complete fresh install of the original image file to no avail.

I did at one point have partial success with a variation on. the two finger solution ie. holding down the on button and volume button until the bios appeared and then kept them down until it went out of the bios again (this with the keyboard already attached I should add). Then the keyboard lit up and worked perfectly but only while it was kept attached and the tablet remained switched on. However since further updates that solution no longer works.

Just for the record I also have the problem of the battery discharging while the machine is switched off.(another commonly reported problem, I believe this started at the same time as the keyboard problem)

I know the type cover is good because it worked on another pro 4 and their keyboard would not work on mine (thank you PC World)

    Now for some thoughts

Why Microsoft do you refuse to sort this issue out, how difficult can it be, just write a driver specifically for the detection of the keyboard, a patch as you might say,  instead of this complicated system where the drivers only load when the keyboard is detected because the keyboard is not getting. detected and the drivers are not loading.

and a lot of people are wasting a lot of their time and in some cases money on spurious solutions.

After all I do believe and I may be wrong but the keyboard port is only a glorified USB port, at least as far as the type cover is concerned.

And while your at it can yo stop my battery draining while it's not being used (overnight)

If there is anyone here who has any influence with Microsoft can they have a word with them please.

    Regards
