No luck for me😢
Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.
I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

2020-07-19T18:43:54+00:00 I experienced a problem with my Surface Pro 4 type cover not functioning after installing updates ( it may have been a firmware update... possibly related to power management; ... I cannot verify which update was the cause but it would begin to help understand why the below procedure worked)
Please try the below which I followed and now my Surface Pro 4 Type Cover works.
- Plug in the Surface Pro 4 to power supply.
- Remove the type cover from the Surface Pro 4
- Keep the Surface Pro 4 plugged into power and the type cover removed for approx 1 day.
- after the wait period above, reconnect your type cover to the surface pro 4
After this it worked and continues to work.
My type cover had not worked for about 2 months. Now it has been working since I followed the above procedure, about 1 month ago.
Why this worked in my case? I would like to know. But glad that it is working now.
Good Luck!

2020-07-19T06:10:37+00:00 I'll add to this growing list; my type cover stayed on my Surface Pro 4 forever. One day, after performing what I thought were standard updates, it stopped working.
I even bought a brand new type cover, thinking mine just went to s**t after four years. Nope! Still just as useless; luckily I returned before Microsoft could get any more money from me.
This is sad; I was so excited to try out the surface hardware, and this just looks like manufactured obsolescence. No more Surface products for me; going back to Dell!
"clean the connectors," they said, counting their money...
