Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I am having same problem. Type  cover not working recently. I put it anahtor surface it worked. I am very dissapointed with Microsoft surface. I spend huge time reading lots of forums and articles.

The worst is that you find no response or feedback from seller to help. They behave like they are not exist or live.  buyying another Microsoft device is far away from me. . I

Thank you. There is one older available which I will try from MSI "10586" but I think it will starts with 103 instead of 19 like the others. Only the second set of numbers will varies. We will see.

Yes, it did flash the firmware. There was a green progress bar below Surface logo and loud fan noise during this operation.

What it didn't flash was the UEFI firmware. I wasn't able to downgrade it.

My type cover works with diffirent surface (version 6 tried in shop) but other type cover doesn't work with my computer.

I still think that this method with flashing firmware is the right way because type cover worked before windows update. Maybe something else is still need to do...

I have noticed there is event warning in device manager "device not migrated due to to partial or ambiguous match". It is shown for Type cover, HID sensor collection V2 (rotation sensor) and also for Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller.

After these errors there is long set of symbols. I tried to search according them but Google found only one similar error but no solution.

All these unmigrated devices are connected to the same bus I2C, right?

0x198c4901 is probably going to be a version starting with "19.2244" which is older than what you mentioned is supported. When you went back and forward with the embedded controller did it flash the firmware during boot or do nothing at all?

Out of curiosity, have you tried to see if a different type cover works?

    Hello Shadow Chaser,

thank you for bringing the method with FW downgrade. This is what I was searching for.

I have surface pro 4 (I think your tutorial is for SP3) and did it step by step with going back and forward with embedded controller 6 times without success. But maybe I used wrong version.

    Actual is 103.2851.256.0

I tried older 103.2241.256.0 from msi package called "17010" 3 times

than older 103.2241.256.0 from msi package called "16299" 2 times

also older 103.1791.258.0 from msi package called "14393" 1 time

I can't figure out how to translate code 0x198c4901 as lowest supported version to 103.xx.xx.xx

    Do you know? Thank you.
