Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I had the same problem. I found out it was a Windows update. I uninstalled the Cumulative Update (KB4550945) then reinstalled it and to my delight the Surface Type Cover works again. Hope this may help.

My SP4 Type Cover died a year and a half ago. It did come back once, for no reason I could determine, and then quit for good after about an hour. This is not a Type Cover problem; it's the machine or firmware. Not only can I not use my Type Cover, the battery now holds a charged for about 45 minutes. It also gets hot while charging. Really, this machine is useless. I certainly can't sell it like this.

Like most here, I've been diligent in trying every fix suggested, and I've done two clean installs of Win10. The time I've wasted could probably have paid for a new machine.

While the SP4 was working -- a couple of years -- I considered it a great tool. Now, I will never buy another Surface product -- especially since I'm starting to see anecdotal reports that similar problems are cropping up even in the Surface Pro 7. Buyer beware, folks. The Surface Pro seems like a brilliant design, but it's just not a stable product.

You are correct, my keyboard is dead already? I thought it was too good to be true. Back to Amazon to buy a replacement for my dead MS type cover, anything other than Microsoft that is.

Enjoy it while you can. Mine came back to life once too, for a sum total of ~3 minutes.

I think the change.org petition is a good start, but is anyone thinking class action lawsuit might get MS's attention more effectively? If this were a car, they'd have been forced to fix it or buy them all back at full retail price long ago.

My SP4 type cover has been dead close to a year, I've tried everything recommended to fix it and nothing helped. Today, I was buying a Bluetooth keyboard to replace it (not Microsoft) and decided to test it one last time, glad I did. Without doing anything to it in months it just started working again. I haven't checked the latest updates to see if a new one could have possibly fixed it. How long it will last is questionable since this the second time, both times were following W10 updates. Hopefully, this will happen for everyone.
