Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I am having similar issues with my SP7 TypeCover. I would never buy this computer if I knew that before.

I have tried everything and the keyboard randomly stops to work. I use it for work and it is extremely frustrating. I have gone back to my previous laptop and will always advocate against Surface line.

Since I do not want to have an over $2000 junk, I will try to get some third-party TypeCover replacement and find a use for it.

    Best,

    P

The surface sucks! Microsoft support blows and it would be nice if they would own up to this issue. Their answer is to give them more money or buy a third party keyboard! Don't buy Microsoft hardware!

Just got off the phone with Microsoft support. Explained and did all of what I could.

To keep the story short, all they can do is offering me a refurbished pro 5 unit for 19800NTD (approximately 655USD) and have to turn them in my pro 4.

This is ridiculous, I can easily get a Pro 5 at this time at a shop BRAND NEW and don't have to give in my pro 4 to for 655USD. Why would I take Microsoft's **** offer as if it was a big deal.

From my feeling in speaking with the representative, they are well aware of the issue but just trying to play dumb then offer something that the customer better off simply keep what they have and call it as it's the customers desire not taking their "****" offer.

Anyways, that pro4 will be my last Microsoft product and I'll spread the word out if I hear anyone wanting to buy a Microsoft product to stay away.

i also saw a post that says that SP-5-6-7 doesn't/will not have such an issue... I am not sure about that.

But for me, its SP-3 (i5) and its definitely having an issue. My brother's SP-3 (i7) also had issues.

my boss uses SP-4 (i5) so far so good. I know many others uses sp-4, but have not heard issues yet with SP-4. I have had the impression that keyboard problems happens only on sp-3.

Anyway, we ought to keep this thread alive till 2-years from now so that we can see if the issue spreads over to sp-5. If so, yes indeed, that Microsoft Surface Pro has an inherent problem with this keyboard thingy...

I'm not sure what post you saw earlier, but this problem has been, unfortunately, repeatedly reported as affecting many Surface Pro units including the SP3, SP4. SP5, SP6, and even the recent SP7:

Agreed. I used SP4 and it had keyboard issues before its power connector went dead. Not ready to repair anything on a useless device. I don't even know where it is in my house. Hopefully when Microsoft come to realize and agree to the fact that they bricked these devices and recall them, I will look for it.
