How to disable or remove Copilot from Word (there is a solution - check 2nd edit)

This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.

I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.

I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).

Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Thank you.

Leah

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.

2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

HOORAY! IT IS OFF!!!!!!!!

I should have noted as I did it... But I logged in and went to

    • "My Microsoft Account" (drop down from clicking the icon next to my account name, top right).
    • "Subscriptions" - Manage
    • The I did one of the two options shown with arrows below - I think I had an option to change subscription where mine now says "Don't switch...". Otherwise, I'm sure you can trigger an option to change plans if you hid the "Cancel Subscription" option.

Microsoft lost me, unwanted adds, reconfiguring my browser with updates, last straw was CoPilot. I installed Ubuntu (what a pleasure). I converted my complicated spreadsheets to Google Sheets (seamless). Updated my hard drives from ntfs to ext4 format, I am now free of the Microsoft shackles. Believe me, I am no computer expert. There is abundant help on YouTube to set yourself free. If you get stuck, chatGPT has the answers. A nice irony seeing Microsoft is a part owner of the product that is helping me purge them from my life. In fact, Copilot did me a favour, it was the final straw in a long sequence of disappointments.

How hypocritical is Microsoft. For the first time I viewed a TV commercial tonight for Microsoft Surface laptop Copilot + PC.

Within the commercial towards the end, the voice over says "AI is not for everyone".

But Microsoft has forced AI Copilot onto their customers via their software, with no option to toggle it off or remove it.

This may be a good reason for writing to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) concerning the legality of what Microsoft is doing with Copilot AI.

I went to my account, and clicked on where it says 'manage' under the name of my subscription (Microsoft 365 Family). I wanted to change from auto-renewing to manual but when I clicked on this, it automatically came up with an option to choose the Family Classic rather than stop auto-renewing. I guess they don't want people to stop this as they might 'forget' or not renew at all. As I wrote, though, it doesn't come into effect until my sub is due for renewal in June next year. I haven't been able to find an option to change to the Classic immediately.

Thanks, i just tried that and it did not let me change, maybe because i am monthly payments...Thanks for the tip though.
