Microsoft Translator Not Translating

Using Translator in a group conversational setting for my ELD (English Language Development) class. Students can join the conversation session, but after the first few words are translated into their chosen language, the transcript stops translating and only shows English/English. I am using Lenovo ThinkPad, students are on Chromebooks.

Additionally, for some reason, when students join the session but have to leave to refresh the page or internet connections, the session still recognizes them as in the session. Still, they cannot rejoin or access the conversation.

We have restarted computer systems, tabs, windows, and the app. We have also started new sessions. The issues began on Thursday, 8/15/24.

I just posted a new thread about this issue and then found this one after the fact. Looks like we're not the only ones having this issue. We have students in our district who do not speak English and started using Microsoft Translator last year on Chromebooks to work with these students. However now we're having issues where spoken words are only appearing in English (or at least when the participant selects Ukrainian or Hindi, as those two I tested with).

Interestingly, it worked when the conversation started from an iOS app, but that's not a viable option for us right now. I'm wondering if this app is just being slowly left to die?

That is my estimation. If anyone has gotten anywhere with Microsoft tech support please reply!

I've tried tons of troubleshooting and can't make out any distinct patterns. I've tried the iOS workaround, it's more often successful, but had it fail too.

I don't think anyone is maintaining the model for the app. The people who were using it were just beta testers for a paid version. I've seen similar translation functionality reported for Azure AI Services, but that's not a standalone app. I'm not a programmer but sounds like it needs a separate app to work with; needs a UI to interact with.

Hopefully, they'll add speech-to-speech translation to Teams or whatever. I've given up hope for the app to be restored.

My IT guy says that it is being phased out. He did say something would replace it.

    This is so frustrating.

Around September 24 we started using the Translator app in our church meetings. We have about six to ten individuals who used it to read in various languages a translation of the spoken words in English. We use a Samsung Galaxy A53 5G on a building WiFi connection to host a conversation, inputting the sound from our PA system. Others join the conversation on a variety of mobile devices, some on 5G, some on the same building WiFi. We had some teething problems, such as one day when the conversation only allowed two or three people to join, then everyone else got the wheel of doom, not letting them in.

Yesterday, 8 December, for the first time we experience the issue of everyone, regardless of joining device, regardless of what language they chose as their language when joining the conversation, was only able to read the text in English. This renders the app almost completely useless - the only people who still find it helpful are our two hearing impaired individuals who need to read in English anyway.

We were just about to start publicising the fact that we offered translation in our meetings, but now we cannot do that. It looks as though the App has a major failure on its hands, and there is no apparent news of any fix or timeline for one. If no Microsoft resources are going towards fixing this, it would help if they could just announce that they are retiring the App, and we can all go and look for something else instead.
