Microsoft Translator Not Translating

Using Translator in a group conversational setting for my ELD (English Language Development) class. Students can join the conversation session, but after the first few words are translated into their chosen language, the transcript stops translating and only shows English/English. I am using Lenovo ThinkPad, students are on Chromebooks.

Additionally, for some reason, when students join the session but have to leave to refresh the page or internet connections, the session still recognizes them as in the session. Still, they cannot rejoin or access the conversation.

We have restarted computer systems, tabs, windows, and the app. We have also started new sessions. The issues began on Thursday, 8/15/24.

We are helping numerous schools in NYC communicate with students using Translator Converse Mode. However, we have decided to focus solely on the iOS app, as the Chromebook app has proven unreliable. On good days, it's an excellent tool, but it can be quite unpredictable.

I wish Microsoft would recognize the value of this tool and the significant impact it has on education.

The only version that seems to be working at the current moment is the iOS version. The android version is shot.

I have used this app for quite a while, but as of this week (Oct 28 2024)., it has began to act up, and not properly show any translation. It is defaulting all devices to display English. I can start hosting a conversation on an Android device, and if I join on any other language it will show everything in English. When attempting to troubleshoot, even if I speak words into my phone in another language, it will translate those words into English on all devices (I tested with speaking "queso" and "fromage", both of which were displayed on the web interface and mobile interface as cheese as the original text and translated text). Like other educators in this thread, I am using this to ease communication between multiple languages in the classroom and up to this point it has been an amazing tool.

I also do not believe it is an issue with the school network blocking certain URLs the application requires to function; I run into the same issue when running off a personal hotspot as I do using the school connection.

I have not been able to even start a conversation if I use the web. It only allows me to join a conversation. The product work great translating for the students into their language, but when they speak a question, I only see what they said in their native tongue, not English. I had high hopes.

Are all of us who are having similar issues using an Apple device(s) only or in combination with Android/PC devices? I start my sessions from with my phone, but it’s an iPhone. It was only after @Dana Ungar mentioned their workaround that I made that connection. If that’s the case, the problem would have be some type of disconnect between a Microsoft app and iOS. I will see what happens if I avoid using any Apple devices in the session.

    Wish us luck!
